Community Builder
Maybe Portland, Atlanta, Wilmington, North Carolina or Albuquerque, New Mexico. Possibly Chicago.
Nice, idk what your background is? But what is the community like in Portland? I’m a black woman in her late 20s who’s looking for community in the creative world! if I do decide to take the leap and move, what is the creative community like in Portland? In NYC it’s very “Hollywood mentality”/status like “who do you know?” / “how many followers do you have?” Type vibes and I’m not really into all of that
I have found work consistently in Portland without many dry periods!
Portland is great
Phoenix is booming. They are also breaking ground on a couple studios here with the new tax break that just passed. I’m a AP at an ad agency, but all of the freelance producers I know here are slammed, along with local crew!
What do you want from your work in this more cost-effective city? Each minor market has different pros and cons, so knowing that will help shape the advice.
Know if anyone who is hiring? 👀
I’m currently working for a NYC based prod co remotely from Florida! The whole team is remote, and we rarely shoot in the city anyway. Really doesn’t matter where I’m based.
Oh wow! How is it working remotely for a production co? What type of content does your co produce?
I made the move from North Jersey (working in Manhattan) to Chicago a yr & 1/2 ago. Cost of living is MUCH better depending on the neighborhood you choose & I’ve thankfully had consistent work either freelance or staff since the move.
Places are much more open to remote producers these days so I’d say visit a city that sparks some interest and do what’s best for you! I came here first to visit & it felt like home so I knew the move would work.
Lived and worked as a production freelancer in Cincinnati from 2003-2014 (went in-house 2014-2019).
It's a tight knit community in the industry that take care of each other. Kindness matters and hardball, super aggro work styles aren't much of a thing.
In my time there I paid off my student loans, paid off a car, bought a 3BR house a mile from downtown, and took several vacations a year.
Jobs were mostly commercial and corporate. I had a not-small chunk of work on TV shows (reality/infotainment), movies (indie all the way up to Marvel), and music videos.
Thank you for the intel! It’s much appreciated! Are you currently back to working freelance?
Curious if anyone knows what production looks like in Austin? Piggybacking on OP’s question :)
