Once I get my bonus (tomorrow) what are the drawbacks of telling my biglaw firm I interviewed with another firm and am strongly considering accepting their soon-to-be offer (at a higher salary)?
For context: the relevant partners at the new firm already told me there will be an offer, it just needs to be written up, and they want me as soon as possible.
The obvious biggest risk is my firm fires me and the new firm, for whatever reason, pulls the offer. Anything else I’m not considering?
I think at some point all of us have experienced this and lost some good opportunities because of it. I've been in this similar situation and I did the following things to help me get over my anxiety of technical interviews.
- Spoke to people with same experience and tech stack, asked them about their technical interviews. This helps you get some basic questions and find out their answers.
- Check Glassdoor and other similar sites to see what kind of interview experience other people have had and what to expect.
- Took my own mock interviews on specific topics that I know are important.
- I had answers prepared for basic questions like " Tell me about yourself?", this will help you relax at the beginning of your interview and set the tone for rest of it.
- Another helpful mind trick was to think that I'm just discussing it with a colleague.
- Instead of getting discouraged after a bad interview, I would ask my interviewer for things that I didn't know and also noted it down to go through it later.
- Keep giving interviews, once you get into the rhythm it gets slightly easier.
I can't tell you the fear goes away but yeah with time and experience you develop your ways to deal with it and move forward. I hope this helps you and all the best!
Thank you for these helpful pointers
Just imagine you are clearing doubts of someone from different project in your company.
this will mask the word call interview, which eventually mask the fear of giving the same.
Even I had a similar situation few months ago. I've tried these things:
- Solve some common leetcode problems(as per your comfort) in your favorite code editor (I prefer codesandbox). This will boost your confidence.
- Revisit fundamentals. Revise as much as you can. This will help you to reduce anxiety.
- Check interview experiences of the similar role in leetcode or any other platform. Try to understand the kind of rounds you're going to take.
- Give interviews even if you feel you're under prepared.
Very normal,
Happens to each one of us sometime in past.
It will take 2-3 interviews, after that you will be on a roll. So just stay confident, if you can work nicely you have that potential. Why to be nervous then. We got nothing to lose, but for winning there are unlimited opportunities on the plate.
Dayum i went to philosophical on this one 🤣
Long story short, more the interview more confident you will become !
All the best 😇
Try to give as many interviews as possible without any expectation of getting selected, just think even if you get selected you will not Join this company as you already doing good in your work.
Then, learn from your mistakes you did in interview and prepare well for those unanswered question.
Hope this will help
I'm recently giving interviews. I felt the same in the beginning. Before the interview started, my heartbeats used to rise. After giving some, i decided to go casually ( like just a brush up on basic things) and that way i felt if i did this well unprepared then with more preparation i'd anyday do better. Hope it helps
I was in the same position 2 months ago.
I started off by taking interviews for the companies, I didn't care if I had an offer from.
"It's fine if you fail. You are just learning"
I couldn't answer much, but after 2-3 interviews,
I was able to understand the pattern & where did I stand, took 2 weeks, prepared & then started giving interviews with a blast! Hope this helps.
Now, I am earning almost similar to what EM used to get in my previous startup!
You could follow below strategy.
1.) I would never want anyone to go unprepared. Let's prepare fully not over prepared.
2.) It is natural to go heart beat up before interview or while giving interview. This happens only when you need it most. If you are very casual with this attitude that let me see what they will ask and it will give you some confidence. However preparation is always necessary whatever attitude you keep it.
3.) Always introspect yourself after each interview in terms of your weakness or what could have been done to make it better. Keep refining your knowledge and statement interview by interview.
4.) Always to the point. No one in interested in our big story.
I had a same problem... I keep on procrastinate just to avoid interviews and i am always good at doing my work..
I tried attending as many interview as possible to overcome this problem... There is nothing to lose from our end 😅. Just do it..😄
Simple thing to do-just attend the interviews...
I am interviewing at Amazon from last week, I have cleared 2 rounds now today I have final round for the role. It was my first experience to face Amazons interview, so rather getting confused I studied well on past experiences in career and what I want next accordingly. You can’t say what interviewer is going to ask but be sure that what ever they ask they will ask on what you have written in the resume. Just be prepared with it and recall all the possible challenges and success from past experience. All the best hope this helps
Don’t worry, try to prepare well and don’t get disappointed if you are rejected.
Make a note of the topics you could not answer and study those topics.
Remember when you were a child with every fall your body became stronger same is applicable with interviews. With every rejection you will learn something new and you will do better in the next interview.
Just give 2 or 3 interview for breaking the ice, and rest will follow
I have same problem. Just forget everything and try give your best answer forget your giving interview think that you are teaching or giving viva
I always lose my track after getting asked a question that I have little to no idea about. But I may have an idea on the logic, so I would explain as best as I can regarding how to do instead of getting a brain freeze.
Also, for theory technical questions, I would respectfully say I don't know the answer to that one, but I have heard of this being used for an application or some part of what the function is based on is familiar to me. I would always stick to what I know and say the rest is not familiar to me, instead of building up on something I have only vague knowledge of. It has helped!
Same here
I am going through exact same thing these days .
