Has anyone ever taken a medical LOA for longer than a week (I am thinking of taking for one month) and come back and has still been on track for promotion? I am very concerned about the timing because it would be me leaving in the middle of walkthroughs that our team wants completed by 8/31. I have a whole list of tasks that I am responsible for completing that, in my current state of mind, I really can not get through effectively. I would be leaving them in a lurch and having to redistribute work. And I feel like this would make them not want to take me back and pass along the message to other teams how I am not dependable. I have already received a less than stellar snapshot for not meeting expectations for the quarter so this is clearly affecting my work. And so before I get more snapshots for not performing to standards, I want to take care of myself and get better so that I can come back and perform well. But then I think of the “consequences” of taking the MLOA and I start thinking maybe I should just push through and try to complete the work assigned to be through the end of the month and then leave? But then I think I just don’t have any hope of making it through the month unscathed from a performance perspective. I don’t know. Damned if I do and damned if I don’t. I just want someone to tell me that it will be OK if I go take care of myself. I feel like such a failure for having to do this and I can’t see how they wouldn’t see me as a failure too and use it to remove me from an important client and then not allow me an opportunity to be promoted once I return.

PwC1: Well put! OP, I’m on 8-week LOA after putting up with a terribly crippling burnout for 4 consecutive months. 6 weeks in and I cannot tell you how much better I feel. It also allowed me to reflect and I have decided to set better boundaries. The promotion isn’t worth it at the cost of your wellness. Even if it gets delayed by an year, I would suggest to think of it as the worst case scenario and still go for the LOA.

I’m not looking for opinions I am looking for references to a variety of medical authorities. I have masked up this whole time but admittedly have not done any research other than what I heard in the news. So now I plan to approach this as an objective question to answer like I would any thoroughly researched legal question.
