Yes, the extremely high TC you see on here is most probably from a higher level of SWE/technical/managerial position at a company located in a HCOL area (i.e. FAANG companies). However due to the pandemic, companies are still trying to figure out both pay and remote work policies. There are some companies out there that are still paying high TC despite a person working remotely (i.e. Airbnb) whereas others may possibly adjust the TC based on the state you're working remotely from (or require you to come into office if you want to keep the extremely high TC).

It makes sense because if you're working in-person, then you're getting near the average of your area and the only way to get more is to have a higher position (unless you're able to work remotely in a tech-centered team/company while living in a MCOL/LCOL area and not getting major salary/TC adjustments).
Most aren’t moving to national pay, but many top tech companies will pay top 90th percentile for your area or higher. So maybe not 500k but 400k. Which is still good and way better than local/regional companies can offer for an IC or first line mgr role.
Top tech companies pay very well for technical roles.
