I hated it there because many of the folks had an inferiority complex. Many of the Deloitte people were MBB declines so many of the people complained that they were smart enough to get into MBB and that they’re doing MBB work, but receiving none of the benefits like the prestige & compensation.
In my time there I heard several self-deprecating jokes as well that were super off putting such as:
- Oh if he’s that smart why didn’t he just go to McKinsey and earn some real money (Director)
- If you were going to Bain, take me with you (SM)
- I’m smart - I was on the waitlist for McKinsey and BCG
The entire culture felt like someone that was sad that they got a Silver Medal at the Olympics rather than Gold whereas most people at other firms would be happy to be an Olympian in the first place.
People who went to Columbia are not like Oh I wish I got into Harvard! But that’s exactly how Deloitte folks are.
I’m sure there are people at Columbia that feel that way. Lol

Yeah I can relate. All my undergrad friends who went there left for industry or other firms super early on. I think it’s a bad culture + terrible WLB
What kind of friends wouldn’t say why
That seems competitive and guarded or something. But, do you.
Maybe they aspired for MBB at one point

If this was the correct root cause, most T2 strategy shops would be full of miserable people. Doesn't seem to be the case

I hear that Deloitte has the worst culture and WLB of the big 4, but they have slightly more prestige, pay and interesting work. Unfortunately, the benefits don't really outweigh the costs in the same way that might be true at other big 4, so people at D are less happy.
I don’t mind Deloitte. I would even go so far as to say I enjoy it
The effect you describe also exists at other T2. Anyone who graduated from an M7 and works at a T2 definitely had interviews with and hopes set on MBB. It feels like second place when you’re friends go to MBB and you’re at S&/ATK/LEK. Keep in mind a lot of M7 people are MBB+D or bust. Everyone will re-interview for FT after T2 internship.
The other paradox is the guy from a lower ranked school that sees his T2 as incredible, thinks he’s the smartest guy ever and then the M7 grad that’s indifferent
