We all know the thinking: older people don’t know what his hip and cool, and they cost too much. But the truth is, older people understand new technology best because they’ve seen things come and go before. when I bring briefs to creatives over 40, they have no pushback just smart questions and they usually have excellent work done in a week. When I bring the same type of brief to young creatives , they have attitudes, and it takes three or four internal rounds for them to get anything close to you presentable work. So in terms of cost and efficiency analysis, the creative with more experience cost less because they take less time, they require less meetings with less people. In my department there are plenty of people over 45. I’m sick of watching when I think crosses the legal line happen over and over again. I know some of these people feel isolated after they are let go. I think there needs to be a very serious industry movement around this. I’m sick of losing her best people to the biases of ageist CFOs and CCOs!

i’m not over 40 but i’m sick of working for people 3 years older than me who can’t manage or mentor and are so focused on proving their own success they can’t be bothered to think of anyone else, so i support this.
What do y’all say when our backs are turned ? Old fogie wanna know
Lets form a 40+ creative agency and take over the ad world
Anyone ever seen the LinkedIn posts from The Old Guys?
One of the benefits of older and more seasoned creatives is that they can mentor and guide new talent. A lot of us want that but can’t have it. Instead we get title inflation.
Ageist attitudes also affect new talent aged older than 25. I would also argue it plays into diversity and inclusion too. It’s easier for certain people to come out hirable at the age range of 21-24 than others. And even if a 30+ year-old junior gets in and does well, now they’re concerned they will not even be able to reach CD level before they’re aged out.
We’re all suffering from what comes down to bean pushers trying to maximize revenue per square foot without considering long term consequences. You think about a lot of issues in modern agency life and it is usually their fault. But this age thing compounds on so many issues that I would really love to see it struck the fuck down.
All that needs to happen is exactly what just happened with women. The 3% conference started and things have changed noticeably for women. But it took a movement. It took angry people. It took people willing to be seen as divisive by the holding company bosses. Are we ready for this yet? We won’t all be women, but we will all be over 40.
It’s not just creatives. It’s a very real issue on the media side too.
The kids must be asleep - haven’t seen a reference to white male dinosaurs in here yet 😂
Not over 40, but tired of working for people over 40 who have no idea how to manage a team, how mentorship works, or how to let ideas that aren’t their own grow an thrive. (Also tired of over 40’s taking ideas I made and repurposing them for a brief I’m not on and producing work that’s shot for shot the same as my idea but they made it first)
“I don’t have a problem with all women, just women who break my heart by cheating on me and then stomp all over it.”
Is unionizing a really hard thing to do? Really curious.
Makes me sad too. Wonder if a salary cap would help.
A salary cap would just benefit all the stock holders in the holding companies.

I’ve seen a 50 yr old stick around because she asked the agency to please stop giving her raises
Any of her male colleagues do that as well?
Its also a short/term expense / cost driven move. But as you say: the value of the humility and experience is probably well worth the investment. In aviation the same thing happens but younger pilots over rely on autopilot. If it fails, crash probability increases as their hand flying skills can be shaky.
Let’s see how we can tackle this - can we break down the problem in a way that will make it clear where the focus/impact needs to be. Whose behavior do we need to change and what do they think now? Is it CDs or ADs making the call? Is it about cost? Relevance?
Compound interest is a powerful thing
