Don’t get a job just yet. This is what you need: 1. Get a partner who has a dog (but don’t get a partner and get a pet together cos you know, shit happens) OR 2. Find a local project for at least 5-6 months. Bond with the dog first and then, you can pony up $150/week (4 days) to find a good place that can take care of your dog. Traveling is tough for certain things and having a dog is one of them. A cat on the other hand, is a different story.

It’s hard but can be done but expect to pay daycare like fees for your dog. I pay anywhere from 35-55 a day for dog sitting if you use a center and the cost varies by level of care. I would honestly wait until you travel less to become a dog owner. My dog requires so much attention and the medical fees are pricey, i got pet insurance and it saved me thousands of dollars. However, dogs are sort of like people they require attention and a lot of care. Try visiting or volunteering at dog shelters as a substitute on your off days, but honestly i wouldn’t do it.

Get a friend with a dog

1) Get a lover/boyfriend/girlfriend/whatever. Have them take care of dog. 2) Check out Rover. It’s like uber but for dog sitting. My wife, when she traveled a lot and wanted a dog, used it and sat for other people’s dogs like every weekend. There are more dogs wanting people than there are people to take care of them. She established regulars and we have one of the same 4-5 dogs each weekend. Could be fun for you.

Volunteer at a shelter! I used to volunteer every Saturday and was able to get my cat fix in. Was always the best part of the week 😊

Can’t be a good dog owner without a partner and do this job. It’s not just about what you want, it’s about doing right by the animal.

Serious answer: please either get a different job or do not get a dog. It's not fair to the dog to just leave it at boarding or a friend's place most of its life. Dogs bond with their human and need some stability and routines, else they get nervous and sad. Please do not do this unless you're changing your lifestyle.

Thanks All! That would be my goal change then. New job and a dog! Thanks for calling me out that I should not be owning a dog when I cannot do justice!! You are the best

If you travel every week, don't get a dog. Do as M1 said, borrow a dog from a friend.

like

Do not get a dog! You are almost never home. You need to spend time to bond. This us nothing you can buy out of.

When I joined the firm my dog went to live with my retired parents. He now lives the life of luxury: four-five long walks per days, too many treats and I pay his health insurance and grooming bills. The vet knows that his weight gain is due to the treats my parents give him. 🤣

Get a small dog so that it can travel with you

I got a dog a few years before going into consulting. Overnight rates vary by city/quality level. I pay $55 per night and get a “friends and family discount” for going so much. I hate that my dog is at boarding so often even though he loves it playing with other dogs for 12 hours / day. Don’t get a dog while in consulting. If I hadn’t had him already and love him like a child, I wouldn’t have a dog right now.

Boarding a dog all week almost every week. Don’t do that to a dog.

What does your retirement budget look like? Assuming no debt. What is your expected basic minimum expenditures (core life)? And what are you budgeting for fun and luxury? My basic is around 10k a month for taxes and food and transport and utilities. Luxury and fun is another ten. Big expense in basic is property tax. Big expenditure in fun is travel. I think my basic budget is too high and I could bring it down and be very happy in a smaller home and less restaurants.
