I am so burned out with my job. I am exhausted from working seemingly nonstop for weeks. I just don’t want to do this anymore. I am starting to look for a new position but every morning it takes everything in me to get out of bed and force myself to keep working another day.

Then schedule a week or two off a month from now. Or go to a therapist and have them write you a note that would qualify you for a leave of absence. Spend the 1 hour it takes to plan/organize things so that you do have the energy to recenter/reflect

likehelpfulfunny

I have a week off scheduled for February so do have that to look forward to. I like your suggestion to spend some time to get organized on what I need to do to get recentered. I will do that after all of my calls finish today.

If you’re burned out, a week or two is not sufficient at all. I’ve taken a whole month as sabbatical to take a break. Then I was able to change jobs to work less overtime hours and with less stress. If you just take 1-2 week and come back, it won’t help you. Also I do recommend talking to a therapist it will help you clear your mind and understand what next steps you need to take to recover from burn out.

like

Oh ok, I hope you’ll be able to find a job with better hours. Use any time off over the weekend or your week of PTO to look for jobs, take your time and don’t pressure yourself. Make sure to find the right job for you and ask all the questions necessary about the culture, WLB, hours etc during your interviews. You can always rely on a recruiter too if it’s too much work for you. Also make sure to take a break once you quit and before you start another job, it’s always great enjoy time off during that period as you’re stress free. Good luck!

like

Also break up your recruiting steps into day by day tasks (e.g. apply to X # of jobs, update res, follow up w A, B, and C jobs). Write out a weekly calendar on Sunday for the following week so it’s no daily effort to plan, just effort to execute. For some reason when I’m burnt out or not feeling it, I don’t have the energy to plan what I’m going to do, only to do it (This is what I do with my weekly workouts. If I didn’t do this every Sunday, I would never work out haha)

I like this - both for recruiting and working out!

Market is hot. Quit and look for a job, you can focus and do better on interviews and get the role you want and sooner

Cobra for health insurance. I don’t know your situation but I didn’t come from much but always made sure I live in a way that allows me to quit my job after I hated my first job and couldn’t leave due to bills- you should always have enough to be able to quit and If you don’t it’s probably a good goal - not preaching just personally felt so freeing to live that way

OP, if you have an opportunity to take sabbatical and/or health leave, please do so. You will thank yourself later.

I have worked in municipal government for almost 17 years. I love what I do as an Inspector, but the environment is toxic, and administration horrible. I have an opportunity to go into the private sector side, as well a second interview for another municipality doing same job. Private sector job will pay 35,000 more but will be 3 hrs away my husband is in law enforcement and can’t leave due to his position. Concerns are: private sector and when recession hits, it’s construction, away from hubby

I accepted a job offer yesterday and the hiring manager said a national criminal background check will be sent to me. After that, I would sign the employment contract. I didn't receive a follow up after that. I'm not sure how long background checks take. When should I follow up?

Other than higher pay (I didn’t become a lawyer to get rich 🤣) what is the benefit of working for BigLaw, or private practice in general? As a government lawyer, I make 6 figures, have excellent benefits, no billable hours requirements, more time off than I know what to do with (including mental health days), a pension, a 401(K), option to chose whether to WFH or not, no weekend work, no working before 8am or after 5pm. It seems like so many lawyers in private practice are unhappy.

How much do exit opportunities actually correlate to the law firm you’re working at? I often hear people advising to shoot for the V10s for the best exits, but do those firms actually give better chances than a V30? Are V10 clients only hiring directly from V10s? Trying to figure out whether choosing a V30 that I really liked over a V10 (that will probably make me hate my life) would actually be detrimental to future opportunities.
