I am sooo exhausted with insurance customer service. I don’t want to answer one more phone call . What’s a good next step for someone in my position? I honestly don’t know what my next step could be.

As a former recruiter who was once in your position: Transferable skills are going to be your ticket out of this job & any other future jobs.

✅ make a list of things you enjoy doing - cross reference it with a list of things you’re good at - example: identifying problems & solutions - customer service you’re doing this all day long.

✅ create a list of those items and then start thinking of ideal companies you would want to work for - if you’re not sure, you can always use the Fortune 500 list & review those companies & industries.

✅ head to those companies websites & use their job searches to search for those keywords that you’re good at “problem solving” - every job with that in the description will pop - maybe you want to be a project analyst or project admin so search, “problem solving” AND “project” see what pulls up.

You need to write your resume in a way that showcases your skills that are relevant to the job you want - not so much what you do at your job now. So, instead of “answering X calls per hour with resolution time of Y” it becomes whatever the job description asks you to do - so if it says “assist in gathering requirements, identifying problems and solutions”

Guess what? A requirement is literally a statement of, “ I’m trying to do this, here’s what I need to do this “ a customer largely says the same things they give you their demands - requirements - and tell you to solve for it - which you do either by escalating or by resolving it.

It’s all about how you articulate what you do.

Could definitely move in to claims auditing/investigations. I also know a few folks who went from Customer Service to Underwriting Assistant to Underwriter in 3-4 years.

One of which increased their salary by nearly 300% in that time frame.

likesmart

I would say YOE are irrelevant if you’re starting as an UW analyst/assistant. It would be difficult to land a job as an underwriter without any experience, no carrier is going to give someone with little to no experience significant UW authority.

As an adjuster you’re primed to move into risk management if that interests you.

Sorry you’re going through it! I’ve been there. First if u like insurance read on!! If u don’t then I would look into HR or Marketing roles as these are transferable skills.

Are you in personal lines or commercial? And do u live in a or near a city? If you live in city u have more options of what kinds of insurance u wanna do health, life, personal, commercial: many tiers in commercial. I have experience in personal & commercial.

If u are licensed and live in small town try to get on at Allstate Or State Farm, they will be better than most.

If u are in a city I would try with one of the majors Progressive, GEICO, ect. get into Personal claims training program or try to get on as a UW Asst with a wholesaler think AmWins, CRC, RT Specialty, Burns & Wilcox. Keep in mind Personal lines UWs are being phased out as computers are doing more less complex Underwriting. So be wary.

I would truly recommend getting into any commercial job u can. Simply because it pays more and tends to be less back forth with clients .

In or near a city you can try commercial UW or Claims training programs with Chubb. Zurich, Everest. Or Entry level commercial jobs with brokers like AON, Alliant, Gallagher. Marsh tends to be harder to break into unless u are fresh out of college or have commercial experience. As you advance it can get harder, exciting great careers are growing in Cyber, Renewable Energy and Pollution, also Aviation will pick up due to drones .

If you are going to stay in personal try to getting into High Net Worth insurance UW - think Chubb, Pure, or Independent agency in a nice area. Good luck!

I’ll definitely look into it. Thank you

A move to underwriting should be fairly easy since you know the lingo and have experience speaking with Insureds. If you search for Assistant UW or UW Trainee job postings, you’re likely to have other experience that companies desire based on your current role. Underwriting is a great path for job stability and growth. Good luck!

Underwriting is an amazing path, but it’s a popular job so it’s hard to get in. UW training programs are the best way in but generally mostly hire right out of college and are hard to get into. The other path is getting your CPCU, or at least AU, paid for by your employer, and then apply for UW. If you can get into an AU role, awesome, but we warned at many carriers they’re seen as clerical and not as training for full on UW. Same story, get CPCU, and change companies of needed.

Another path is becoming a business analyst.

What does this entail ?

Claims is a good step. It pays well with a lot of advancement opportunity. It is a high intensity job though.

Help desired from anyone who made the switch into tech for product management or product marketing management:

Currently an Account Manager/Project Manager at PR Comms agency (1yr) and want to make the switch back to tech.

I have sales (both tech + retail), marketing, social media and account management experience (5 yrs total additional exp). I’m finding I’ll need a PMP or a Product Management cert to “have more experience” to get back in.

Anxiety before your sales demos?

Do these 2 things I used to do to get over it:

1. Know the product inside out - it will take time for you to gain confidence in your sales abilities but if you know the product will you’ll be more confident in that domain.

2. Do more demos - the more calls and presentations you do the more comfortable you’ll get. My advice is to try to get on a lot of presentations, even with leads that aren’t so good.
