If the Feds could actually fire low performers and if they had the flexibility to hire talent and pay market rates, then we wouldn't have this problem.
That's not necessarily opposed to liberalism, just so you're aware. ;)
I am a military spouse, but the idea of what that would mean for my husband’s care/quality of life keeps me up at night.
Prices skyrocketing are exactly what disabled veterans cannot afford to have happen. So many of my husband’s colleagues are at/below poverty line since getting out of the service. He is in a better situation than most, because I am the breadwinner, at least until his health improves. But for people with poor health/injuries...increased prices means they cannot get care. So the goal is to work with what we have to improve that, in my mind.
As a mil spouse, the idea of privatizing healthcare for vets is terrifying. Dealing with our provider price gouging medications, not covering necessary treatments and procedures, and having to deal with fighting our insurer to cover what we have paid as we watch our non-military friends do constantly (my best friend is type 1 diabetic and can barely afford her insulin), is not the outcome we should move towards.
I was on active duty and in the national guard. In the national guard you have a ridiculously low monthly co pay. Go to any in network doctor for anything and have no copay.
If you expanded this and made it free. You could cut out the VA and still give a high level of care, With little wait times.
Considering the amount of veterans that kill theirselves I think this would be a much more effective model.
The federal govt is pretty terrible at a large portion of functions, but sending people and organizations cash is its strong suit.
Are you talking about collaboration between the Military Health System (MTFs plus Tricare) and the VA? Because that is starting to happen and should continue to grow.
Honestly, I'm not sure privatization is the answer, because plenty of private companies have massive issues as well. I think some sort of public-private partnership would be best, plus better Veterans specific program for behavioral health, back pain, etc. and massive nationwide healthcare reform.
