I am terrible at withholding salary information from recruiters. Yesterday a recruiter gave the line “I would hate for us to get to the end of the interview process only for it to turn out that we couldn’t give the salary you would need” so I panicked and threw out a number that was thirty percent higher than my current pay. He then told me the salary range which was way higher! Do you really just firmly repeat “I need to learn more about the team and benefits before I can assign a number?”

I read this suggestion the other day: “I’m still learning about the position, so I can’t give you a number at the moment, but I’m sure you already have something in mind. What’s the range?”

Had an interview yesterday and told her that I obviously would not want to take a pay cut from what I am making currently, but would want to consider their benefits including 401k match and health insurance plans prior to putting out a number. It worked for me cause she then shared that it would be $6000 more in base than I’m making now, $20,000 in bonuses throughout the year and a $600-700 monthly car stipend. I probably will try to negotiate more base pay if I get the offer though.

Always ask for what the role is budgeted for. It is not a secret. If they won’t give you the budget, it means the job requisition has not been approved and there is no budget yet.

Never show your sleight of hand. In negotiations, the first one to give a number often loses. If you must give a salary requirement, always quote a range.

You and me both; this scenario played out beat for beat with me 2 weeks ago. I learned two valuable lessons. I don’t have to make the first move, and it’s okay to let others tell us what we’re worth if they’re offering double our salary!

I live in LCOL and I gave the Amazon recruiter the average from research on levels.fyi for silicon valley (VHCOL) at Amazon lol. He said that's fair and we moved along. I didn't end up getting an offer but it's because I failed the leetcode challenge!

Give a number in the first round of HR interview so if we do not reach a mutual number we can say bye bye and not waste our time in the process. This is what is happening for me in my past companies recruiting process.. and that's helpful!

I always ask in the first "screening" call for the same reason--no point in conducting interviews if we're not on the same page re: comp. It's always fair for you to ask for the salary range for the role. If they won't share, then you don't engage further. But even if I give you a range, if it's a broad range, I'm going to try to pinpoint what your minimum threshold is. I'm not trying to low-ball anyone. I ask because it helps me present a candidate to my hiring team correctly.

I always asked what’s the comp range first thing. If it’s not in my range, I’m out. Time is money and time is a resource I can’t take back.

Anyone else kind of bored clerking? I liked law school and thought I liked research and writing, but so far this district court clerkship has been pretty boring—lots of state law issues that are poorly briefed. Though to be fair, most of my time has been spent on one big case that I’m 99% sure is going to settle but not until the eve of trial bc that’s plaintiff’s counsel’s m.o.; so my work resolving the insane number of SJ and Daubert motions seems like a waste of my time.
