Yes to rug - I’d go for a large rectangular one that your couch can partially sit on! Also add a small drink holder style coffee table (maybe also in a bright color as a nod to your TV stand); a large one won’t work with this space given the relative size of your couch vs the room.
Don’t think you need anything under the clock; will look too busy.

I am an interior design addict, here are some pointers:
- A rug defines space, so you use it to anchor and break up “sections” of a room
- Think of wall art the same way
- Think of where objects are drawing the eye; right now you have low/squat/comfy which is making the room look smaller
- Where your tv is placed is currently making the clock look weird. I wouldn’t put that clock on that wall at all, and I would not center any art on that wall
- You should have 3 points of light in every room, ideally not including the ceiling light. A floor lamp, a table lamp, spotlights or sconces, candles, etc all count
- Design around how space is used. Where do you need to put a cup, where do you tend to reach for a book, etc. Baskets full of blankets beside your sofa are doing you no favors; look for storage tables to do double duty. Or consider moving the basket somewhere that it’s a feature of the room. Or a blanket ladder where the clock is could really help with balance
If you have other photos of other angles of the room, share! and we can give more specific ideas
This is great advice ! OP suggest you do things that make the room seem taller and raise the eye - ie well curated bookshelves, blanket ladder, etc.

Here’s a rough up of some relatively inexpensive changes you coukd easily do. See how the balance totally changes?
- anchor with a rug
- add 2 pieces of art on the wall, not extending far past the couch’s depth
- add a warm pendant light in the corner
- use a plant stand or small table to elevate that plant higher than the arm of the sofa
- lose the clock
- find a side table that is in the color family of the tv stand, round is nice for variety (could be yellow, gold, brass…)
- add a table lamp to the side table
- blanket storage basket could move to where those outlets are, beside the tv

Maybe a small circle or rectangular rug?
I’d just add another large floor plant or two and a decorative throw for the couch to add color. Less is more.
You need a large rug that will go under the couch and extend beyond it. So maybe 2.5-3x the area of the larger couch. Then you’ll need some large paintings (maybe even to replace the clock) and a tall floor plant or two.

Yes to rug!
Also not sure if you can but maybe update the TV console? It's too small for the TV and space. If you can update that, I think it'll really help!
Also second a nice big plant (Palm, Fiddle Leaf, etc.)
Yeah new TV stand is on the list. Just got a new TV and the stand is too far out, before it was centered so looked better
All the furniture faces the TV. And Joey doesn’t share food. If you don’t have a duck, I would agree with other comments here and go for the rug.

Looking at this photo you’re already better than I am 😂
I’m about to post my living room for more design recommendations haha you’re so smart for doing this OP!
If it were me, I would move the tv stand flush against the wall with the door and add a sofa table or bar cart under the clock. You could also consider mounting the tv. Definitely get a plant stand for the plant in the corner so it is a more prominent object in the room!
It’s actually a litter box, so trying to hid it!
New console for under the tv. Some statement throw pillows. And another large plant on this side of the couch. Maybe a small rug. That couch looks comfy where is it from?
Oh I bet. Things are so delayed right now! Looks great though!
I like this post.
Hire an interior designer bc one thing they’ll help you with is measurements and proportions in space, which is very hard to get right from online pics of furniture. I’d say the biggest challenge is that your furniture is too big for the space.
Consensus seems to be a rug is needed. Now the question of what color? I’m thinking solid, not pattern

Definitely look for a pattern. It doesn’t have to be big and bold, but something to add texture and interest is needed.

I think you shouldn’t block the window with the couch
Really only place for it, will say new couch is taller than expected so blocks more
Love the doggo just chilling on the couch btw.

Don't put anything under the clock - it'll look cluttered. You need a big area rug to tie the room together. A nice piece of art would help on the wall behind the couch (not on the same wall as the clock) in the far right corner of the picture.
If it’s not a right angle, it’s a wrong angle - tv on the diagonal looks weird, I’d put it on that wall and then have a gallery wall of decor behind it

I think function. Table for drinks and remote, rug for feet, lamps for reading. You could wall mount the TV. Plus the design tips above -
