I am trying flexible seating for the 1st time this year, and I feel like kids are just sitting with their friends and segregating themselves by gender. For those who do flexible seating, how do you

Is it effecting their work? If not, does it really matter? I have my flexible seating rules up all over the room. My students know that their ability to choose their seat depends mainly on behavior and work ethic. The biggest rule written on my posters is that Ms. Hall can change anyone's seat if they are causing a distraction to others or not completing their own work.

like

I can change their seat, but I want them to sit with more people than just their friends... they aren’t meeting new people aside from once a week. I’m concerned about cliques.

like

Explicitly teach them what’s expected and record it on an anchor chart. We have an anchor chart posted at the front of our room titled “how to choose a seat.” The class brainstormed all of the points on it, and we discussed it every single day. The first 4 weeks of school I placed them around the room using name tents. Then we did the anchor chart, then I would send them off one at a time to choose a seat for 2 weeks, then they could choose their own. Of any of the expectations were broken, we’d all come together as a class and revisit the expectations.

Have you ever used “clock buddies?” Look it up. Kids have fellow classmates sign up on a clock at each of the hours. For a group work day you say, today sit with your 10 o’clock partner. Works well

like

I have open seating, but I let students know that I will assign seats if they show that they need help making smart choices. That gives the responsibility to them

like

Maybe you could have some mix it up days planned where they have to sit with someone new. Make it into a game or competition and they should buy-in.

like

I love that idea of a competition !!! Thank you. I hadn’t even considered that.

I have a magnetic chart with their numbers on magnets. Students pick a spot in the morning. They have 5 seconds to pick. I constantly remind them that the spot they pick is for them to do their best work, it's not about their friends. Once they pick, they must ask me for approval to switch. If it looks like they're just friend following, I say no.

My in-laws think any woman or black person in a leadership position is there because of diversity and that companies shouldn’t try to put any effort into promoting diversity in their recruitment because it harms minorities as people will always think those minorities are in a position of power only because they were hired because of gender/race quotas. They also think it’s perfectly justified in prioritizing hiring a woman over a man (all else being equal) because of potential for ‘me too’. 😣

I have been invited to a company diversity program. After reviewing the materials, I believe this will be more divisive and unhelpful than it will be constructive. I would like to not attend. Has anyone been successful in having this type of conversation with their manager? And because it seems to matter these days, I’ll just throw out there that I am not a cis white man 😂

The problem with diversity is they focus on a quota rather than changing the culture of marginalized groups in the office. So often people speak over me, take credit for my ideas... and it's accepted.

Diversity in advertising is great, however I think it should also include diversity in opinion/political views. Anyone agree/disagree?

My work is highly focused on inclusion and today, while driving through the park, I felt bad for laughing at a group of larpers. They have nerf combat gear, too. I tried hard not to be insensitive to them being their true selves but i laughed … hard! And now I feel bad for laughing at them.

Looking at making a move from a top 20 city to PNW farm style living. Work from home permanently and live peacefully. I'd be close enough to SEA that I'd be able to make it work if I had to (ie if remote ops reversed course) Anyone thinking similar or already done so? Also, has anyone sold their house to an institutional buyer? Obviously, you may get less cash, but it will also take longer to sell, so you are paying holding costs, etc and taking on more market risk.
