I am trying to create a formula based on data type geography. I want to ba able to write if(cell=NY,,) but I get #value.

How do I get formula to recognize the text of a geography data type?

To change the data format. Go to data tab and select text to columns.
Delimited Next
Tab Next
Select Text finish.
Hope this helps

Doesn't help, I want the format to be Geography and I want to use the value in a formula

I found that valuetotext works, but it's cumbersome

This should work

Your data is not consistent, one is a number and the other is text. When you have the cell selected you can see the data type in the ribbon above in the home section.

Why do you say one is a number and the other text? They are both text.

Can you build a reference table and use a vlookup?

I didn't think of that. Would be more cumbersome then valuetotext I would think.

This formula returns FALSE. Not sure why the image I posted earlier is no longer showing.

Iade some confusion by not putting in the " in my original post but my question is not about how to write an if statement, that was an example. My question is what's the most efficient way to reference a data type as part of a larger formula.

The point of my post is how to use a value formatted as Geography in a formula such as an If or vlookup etc.

A vlookup of New Jersey against data-type-geography-new-jersey won't work.

Did you try index match?

Won’t work if setting values equal to each other returns false

Put “NY”, that’ll allow excel to read it as text, sounds silly but should do the trick

Is there a keyboard shortcut for the same.

Pressing f5 or ctrl + g does not open the same "go to" dialogue box which opens on double clicking those arrows.

Thanks
