I am trying to gauge the moral of teachers.

Overall, are you satisfied/dissatisfied with teaching as a career as a whole? Why or why not?

I love teaching, and I love my students, but I am having a rough time with resident educator (the program we have to take our first for years of school) and all the testing for students. It’s just a shame my students, which are largely students who struggle in a normal classroom, and still expected to do well on the exact same test as everyone else. It’s just heartbreaking to see students who struggle with this type of testing, especially when they can tear apart an engine and put it back together, or rewire a house with ease, which is not something everyone can do. Testing is just awful, and it takes away from what we do.

My first year teaching was 1990. I still have fun and *love* my students. I’ve taught or worked with every grade level either as a teacher or counselor. My preference is being a classroom teacher. Counselors don’t get the opportunity to see students as often as teachers. Every day, I work with 150 or so high sophomores-seniors. I teach science and the best part is seeing the wonder and excitement in the lab!🥰🧬🔬🧪😊
I do hate the standardized testing schools are required to administer, poorly written and lacking the connections to real learning and impossible to gain any authentic data. Yet, those tests drive *everything*, especially funding in my state. A bill passed yesterday would tie school funding and teacher pay to these tests. That is disheartening since many teachers, including me, will not qualify for state raises because I do not teach a tested subject. The politicians of this state have sent the message the my teaching and the teaching of thousands of other teachers simply does not *deserve* to be rewarded, regardless of our hard work. 😡💰🤯

I am when I am in my classroom, I love my job! However, being continually told to do more and more more, with less and less and less puts morale in a precarious place. I feel unsupported and by our district administration as they don’t listen to concerns and work to help the teachers fill in the gaps. They just love to start new and more programs! The weight on my back is getting so heavy it gets in the way of the joy I feel teaching children.

I totally agree! In the classroom- great! Lack of support and so many demands without being allowed to have a voice brings down moral in our school.

I have more education than my husband who has a Masters in Engineering. I make 1/3 what he makes and work evening and weekends. My contribution to the family right now is health insurance and student loan debt. Because of Ohio’s testing requirements, it’s impossible to teach much more than how to answer test questions. I’m totally disappointed in what has been happening in our state

I love teaching! I teach special ed for severe/profound with multiple disabilities. It’s very hard job but at the same time very rewarding. My students deserve to have the same school experience as their peers and I’m trying to give that to them. I didn’t start teaching until I was 50 and this is my 5th year. I will do it as long as I can💕

I love teaching and have always chosen the really tough kids to guide and give opportunities to that most don’t want to put in the effort show them. Unfortunately, lack of support on both the admin and parents has gotten exhausting and I chose to move on. My health, well-being, and family were suffering for it.
I am now teaching abroad and loving it!

This is only my second year teaching but I have to agree with the posts above. I LOVE teaching my students and the work we put in as teacher's is the most fulfilling thing I think one can do. But administration makes my job a lot harder and a good administration I feel can really make or break someone's teaching experience. However, at the end of the day I always remind/ask myself, who am I doing this for, the kids or the administration? As long as I'm doing my job to make the lives of children and families better, then I know I'm doing the right thing and I'm giving my best.

I love teaching, but it’s difficult to teach while managing so many disruptive behaviors.

Hey fellow GAer! Same! I’m sure everyone says this but I feel like each year it gets worse.

I have over 20 years in this business. I have done tremendous good for kids. I would NEVER recommend this job to anyone with the way the system is set up. The system is BROKEN. And teachers suffer the consequences with our health...mental and physical and our finances. People who have never been a teacher just wouldn’t understand this. We aren’t clergy and shouldn’t be treated as such in the way we are paid and what we are expected to provide to others

like

Actually, clergy make decent money when factoring in healthcare. I used to work for the Episcopal Church. I loved it but donations determine one’s salary. It can be challenging in that regard.

I agree wholeheartedly that once education became a weapon of politicians, our system went downhill. I don’t encourage others to take up the profession even though I think that is wrong. We need good people to come in and make this a system worth working in.

I am overall dissatisfied by how incredibly stressful it is. In my 20 years, nothing has managed to reduce the frantic nature of the job. Perhaps I'm just not well suited for it, but it just seems so high pressure, and I have never ever felt satisfied that I'm meeting the needs of my students. The closest I've come is in a specialist position, but the district leadership changed the structure and expectations of the position and combined it with another position, then placed someone else in it whose position had been eliminated... So even that respite was temporary, for me. I am discouraging my own kids from entering the field. I wish I was qualified to do something else. But I'm not, and financially I have no choice but to hang in there for about 12 more years. I imagine there are many people in a similar place, and that's no way to live... Sigh.

like

I have to say, though, that when the kids walk into the room, that all fades and I am so happy to have the honor to be their guide in the world of learning. Sigh again.

I love being in the classroom with my kids. Hate all of the grading and work outside of school.

Dissatisfied- the emphasis on test scores have ruined teaching

We are continually asked to do more with less. There is rarely support from administrators. When student behaviors occur, we are essentially told that it's our fault because we didn't follow every detail of a behavior plan. If a parent complains, we are thrown under the bus.

I am generally very happy, but there are some days that are so very very challenging that it takes a lot to stay positive

like

I love my students and my current position, but my administration this year has been antagonistic instead of supportive, and my health was affected in all areas. The changing expectations, lack of planning time, unrealistic goals, etc. are all rough, but administration has been what makes the difference for me.

like

Couldn’t agree more! I have been doing this for over a decade and never thought I would leave the profession until this year. I am ready to walk away. This is all because of administrators.

like

Overall, satisfied. I laugh out loud everyday. But honestly some days are so bad that I think about quitting a lot. So even though I love my students and I laugh everyday, I think about leaving the profession at least 2-3 times a year. But now I fear I am not qualified to do any other profession 🤷🏼‍♀️ so I stay.

I love teaching and I love kids but I’m super tired of bureaucracy and what comes with it!

like

I love the classroom, mostly. The students that are working hard and doing what they need to do and are getting the tough information are what sustain me. The cell phone usage, sleeping because they are up until all hours playing video games, and the parents being lawnmower parents are almost unbearable.

like

I taught MS for 15 years, HS for 2, and for the past 3 years I’ve been an elementary librarian. I would have never left HS if our HS wouldn’t have been shut down. But to answer your question, I’m extremely dissatisfied. Teaching isn’t about educating a child anymore. It’s about preparing them for a test

Hi! I’ve been a voluntary benefits agent with a few different carriers for 5 1/2 years. I’m currently the AE for 75+ accounts. My favorite part of my role now is educating/counseling people on benefit options. I’m wondering if there are others who’ve been in the same boat. Open to any suggestions!
