I am trying to get an ADHD diagnosis, as my primary care and myself both think I could have it (runs in the fam). How many of y’all got diagnosed by a psychiatrist? Or did you have to do the extensive 4ish hour testing?

My psychiatrist said most psychiatrists won’t diagnose + give meds for adhd but the testing can get so expensive so I want to know if I should see someone else

I used Ahead (no longer in business) but it was similar to Done or the other online platforms. 1hr interview for diagnosis and then matched up with a doc for treatment

I was first diagnosed by a therapist who suspected ADHD (wasn't the reason I went there) and had me take a short paper test and then sent me to a psychiatrist to confirm. That psychiatrist asked me a series of questions about my childhood and adult life in one or two sessions before diagnosing and prescribing. Two more psychiatrists that I went to after did the same exact thing to confirm before treatment. I've heard of the extensive testing some people (usually children) are put through but none of the 4 psychiatrists I've gone to in the DC area (2 specializing in ADHD) used it. I'd ask about the purpose and how the results will be used for treatment. Good luck!

Awesome thanks! The psychiatrist I just started seeing won’t listen to me and keeps writing it off as anxiety but anxiety/depression meds have never had any positive effect on me(always get side effects). She said that I have to do the extensive testing, but other people I know didn’t do that so I think I just need to see someone else. In high school I saw one who gave me a paper test and gave me meds but my parents made me stop taking them after a few weeks because they didn’t like the idea of meds. I can’t remember if I ever got a formal diagnosis from him though.

I’m also in the DC/NOVA area, do you happen to remember the names of the psychiatrists you saw?

I got diagnosed and get medication from my PCP.

I wish. Mine told me she needs a formal diagnosis to prescribe adhd meds. She’s given me antidepressants/anti anxiety meds before but they’ve never helped

I went to a therapist, at the recommendation of my PCP, for “possible postpartum or anxiety”, after describing life pre and post baby, he was like…”um… have you ever been tested for ADHD?” I took a paper test thing, maybe 20 mins and he was like, “yep, that’s ADHD; sorry it takes so long for women to be diagnosed.” He sent documentation to my PCP who did make me try non-stimulate medication first but otherwise was fine with it.

Find a doc that specializes in it. Yours is probably afraid because the drugs are scheduled.

I’ve had pcp’s prescribe me meds after I told them I was diagnosed in the past. They never confirmed the Dx

I was Diagnosed early in my 20 s I had an appoint for my daughter n while discussing my daughter n all her difficulties on nursery school etc: he said to me he saw myself to be in more in need, did a evaluation on myself n changed my life ! It was only a hour of testing ! But both my daughter n I are doing great ! We went to a neurologist! We see a therapist regularly well I do the mom ! But thriving with! Focus is on point !

I was diagnosed in college and it was basically just a questionnaire. May be different with adult diagnosis

I was diagnosed in 2019 at 31 by my psychiatrist, who took several months to actually test me for diagnosis. We went through the whole depression/anxiety drama with multiple meds tested and failed.
She insisted that I stop using cannabis for 30 days and have a clean urine test before she would even consider doing any diagnosis for ADHD…Once that happened, I had an in-person appointment where went went through a series of questions and it was an immediate diagnosis.

You can't get your primary care physician to diagnos you? That is who diagnosed me and she also prescribes my meds every month. You could try a psychiatrist but if your primary care alerady thinks you may have it, they should be the one to diagnos you.

Mental health isn’t her specialty and adhd (especially inattentive types) shares symptoms with anxiety/depression which is what I was told I have my whole childhood. Its why so many women don’t get diagnosed until adulthood. She said she can’t be sure and won’t prescribe meds without an official diagnosis bc they’re schedule 2 drugs. The psychiatrist I saw said she doesn’t even diagnose/prescribe to people without the extensive 4 hour testing thing so I’m gonna see a different one that specializes in adhd or try one of the online sites that pwc1 mentioned.

I was actually diagnosed by my primary care physician. I tried to get diagnosed by my psychiatrist and had better luk with my PCP. I know some people who have used their psychiatrist though and had luck so it is definitely worth a shot.
