I am two years out from my end of enlistment. Is there anything I should be doing now that you wish you had done at this point?

Side details: Family of 4, own a home, no consumer debt other than my home, I am a few classes shy of my MBA (still actively pursuing and will have it by the time I get out), I live near an area with a ton of corporate offices and headquarters.

Thanks for your time and feedback!

First, no one likes a quitter. At this point, you just need to have a plan. Take TAPS, then take TAPS again. No one will hire you this soon, but start networking. The conversation shouldn’t be, “can I have a job?” But, “what can I do now to be a desirable candidate in 2 years?”

Also- the fact you’re on here trying to figure out what to do to be successful, you’re already miles ahead of 90% of vets that transition out. You’ll rock it!

If you can get any meaningful software certifications to help get into tech role that’s always a plus! SAP, Salesforce, D365, Workday, AWS any of those platforms would be solid!

This only matters if you plan to be in IT or tech.

Your MBA program will probably have the best opportunities to job placement, but it couldn’t hurt to join some veterans networking groups in your area now. I think it’s better to get to know people, let them know you’re getting out soon, and pick their brains about various jobs and companies in the area now. If you wait until you’re almost out, it’ll and it just come across as asking for a job rather than advice.

Agree with EYP1 ... For a couple additional steps: (1) do a bit of research on the company (review their website), then (2) have a few questions prepared. You'll be ahead of many of the folks that I've talked with in similar positions.

Sounds like a good plan, are you retiring from the military or just separating from AD?

You won’t be able to get it at 50. Can do a reduced 90 day increments once you deploy as a reservist, not before

If it isn’t a top 25 MBA, do yourself a favor and transfer to one that is. The difference between the Top 7 and Top 25 is ~$30k in initial salary. The difference between Top 25 and everyone else can be even more drastic. The real value, though, is the network you build there to help your long term prospects.

If you have access to the GI Bill and your MBA program isn't a target school, strat prepping now for a "real" MBA; this might mean switching to a different business related masters (e.g., analytics, finance). Start preparing for the GMAT.

I did my undergrad on active duty. When I separated, it was a stretch to find six figure jobs that weren't shift work. Once I got a good enough MBA and a couple years post-MBA experience (strategy consulting), I was tripping over cushy job offers paying $200K+ base salary.

Buy another home.

I graduated with my MBA in finance in 2020 and began working at a bank as a Management Trainee. 2 years later, I am an assistant to a financial advisor studying to become a financial advisor. However, I have to do this on MY time and not the bank's.
I am not in a Management position, I make as much as a teacher in a good district and I just don't feel my overall self worth at this job. Does anyone have any advice that can help this situation?

Current MBA student struggling with choosing between internship offers - both are very similar in size but is one focused more in the tech space (slightly stronger rep and I like the team a little better) and the other more industrial / non-tech services (I will likely want to end up at a fund that focuses in this space after MBA). I would like to end up in a different geography than where these firms are after MBA so which is better for FT recruiting - stronger name or more relevant industry?

I’m seeing lots of posts about really bad losses. If you trade you’re going to lose money - hopefully not all the time, but many positions will be mistakes. But you need a process to find ideas and manage positions. Two books you should read are “The New Trading for a Livinng” and “The Laws of Trading.” Both look at psychology, process, and risk in different ways that can help you work out your own process. The next 18 months will be much harder than the last 18 - time to start learning.

As a neurodivergent professional one thing I’ve never figured out is how to leverage your network to get a job. Specifically, jobs that aren’t publicized widely. Do you straight up just ask? How do I even look for digital marketing jobs? I also own a blog that has been a little dormant but I put it on my resume anyway.

Anyone at JPMorgan Chase willing to refer to a DC Data position? Happy to talk it out.

I flunked out of school and had no options when I joined the army. I hated every second of my time in, and spent all my weekends getting as drunk as possible.

Now that I’m out, I graduated with my BA in Econ, got a job I love, and somehow got into an M7 Bschool with a 670 GMAT. I look back on my time in and laugh, and still talk with some of my old army buddies (though not as often anymore)

Amazing how time can change your perspective, because 10 years ago I never thought I’d be here.
