I am unemployed for a year now. Lengthy job hunting and interview processes already make me lose faith. Have a serious health issue that requires surgery soon this month. Current savings less than 80K and apt rent is 2K/month, so I got anxious over financial security. What would you suggest to achieve FIRE for my case? I am frustrated.

Not sure FIRE should be your prority now. I would straightforward look for cheaper housing ASAP no matter where, and dedicate some of those savings to health insurance.

On your situation, FIRE is the least of your concerns

like

Agreed 100%. You should find health insurance now (if you can given your health concerns). Depending on that cost, figure out budgeting to last you with savings left over.

Are you still on unemployment? Did you get the additional subsidy? Priority should then be to save as much money as possible unless you know you will get a job soon.

If you need to, could you move back home with any family? Or can you find roommates? You should be able to break your lease due to your situation but $2000 on rent being unemployed is wasting money at this point.

I would also consider getting a resume/interview coach. Sorry this has been a difficult journey for you – 1 year is a very long time and I know how soul crushing job hunts can be. A coach might be able to help you adjust your approach and get better at interviewing.

FIRE is really only for people who are super lucky in life. I can't sugar coat it for you. I'm sorry.

You also need to bring in income somehow.

Definitely negotiate with insurance and the hospital on the surgery. Not for all hospitals but for some there is a budget allocated for those who can't pay for medical care which is funded by some charitable trusts. That bank of money tends to get whittled down within the first couple months but my guess is it might be depleted first month this year due to covid. Depending on what the surgery is you may want to shop around if you can. If you can do it, you may want to consider medical tourism which is getting medical procedures done in foreign countries but its entirely dependent on your procedure and what the costs are out-of-pocket vs with insurance.

Check when your lease is up, and consider moving to a cheaper place but also negotiate with your landlord and mention your surgery so see if they'll give you some leeway. Not sure about your goals for FIRE, but it doesn't look great for you.

Just a question: is the health issue affecting what type of jobs you take? Do you have a partner?

I’d imagine most audit firms or companies need finance stuff. What’s the issue for not finding a job ? Even PWC will hire part time labor for busy season. Could be a good option for you after surgery. You should look into it ASAP.

This company I am interviewing with is not proposing a base salary and an OTE. They are asking me to create it and I really need guidance here. It’s an AE role in medical SaaS sales for orthopedics surgery. What do I need to ask? So far I know that they cover medical insurance, there is no 401k, and there are private company stock options. It’s mainly inside sales with maybe 10% travel.

My thought was 75k base and 110k OTE. But they are saying to lower the base and increase OTE.
