This happened to me as well on my current project. I was honest with my delivery lead and told them I was struggling and needed support. I was able to get connect with a local person in a similar role on another project for help. Also might take some early morning or late night meetings in the short term to work on it with your offshore team until you feel confident, not ideal but worth it to learn
This is probably my next step if I can’t make headway with my project lead. Thank you so much!
Agree with A1. Unless you were specifically hired as an RPA SME, you need to vocalize your issues and connect with the right SME. The engagement MD should have a resource in mind.
Yeah you should definitely let the project lead know you need some help. Nothing wrong with that.
Coding is not something that’s just “picked up”. Definitely get support and raise that you’re not an expert in this
Sounds like a project with no plan, push the project manager to explain what the plan is. Is it clear what needs to be delivered? Is it clear how the organisation will achieve these goals? It’s the PM’s job to get access to resources. Escalate all your blockers in a formal report.
Shocking😒!! Unfortunately I had very similar experience where project lead said..you will be fine and we need someone who has general understanding of “this” technology and once I rolled on project the client expected SME with large implementation experience. I had talk my manager and quickly exited the project before going any further.
But talk to your manager/mentor to get help with project and escalate if you know there is likely of delay so they can speak with client.
In future:
- if you interview for specific roll, ask to the talk previous colleagues who were on the project and talk to people who have worked with manager to get understanding of things to come.
-if project doesn’t fit your skill set then don’t take it. It’s one thing to develop a new skill and another to take roll where you are novice but in mid-senior level.
What RPA product?
Seek help right away. Good thing you've got some parts figured; let your project lead know of the parts you are struggling with, and the nature of help needed. Don't go in with a black slate - state specifically what you need to turn the project around - be honest and open.
