I am working with a self contained student to learn his sight words. We are using Snap Words and I am excited about his progress. But when we go to share his success the other teacher says " He can't do that. He doesn't even know the letter names." Right in front of him. It broke my heart for him. I have data that shows he does know his letters and sounds and can identify 14 of his sight words, but the teacher doesn't believe in him or what I tell her. It makes me feel so discouraged.

That’s wrong on so many levels…
Unprofessional — never ever speak negative in front of a child…. Believe in the possibilities..: speak it! Praise the child for every success!

Been there. Keep working and encouraging the student. Keep the data and present it at the IEP. The teacher I dealt with wouldn’t argue with my data because would make her look like she was the issue. I also made sure that my aide took some of the progress monitoring so the teacher couldn’t say it was my manipulating the results.

I would address the situation with the principal. You are definitely putting this student's needs first. Show them your data and express your concern about him being discouraged and not encouraged.

That other teacher doesn’t have a clue or heart! You sure that’s a teacher? I mean really, who does that? Sounds like some gen. Ed teacher who doesn’t like special Ed kids

Your student is a star! ❤️. Stay positive - that is exciting progress!!!. With a smile on your face, let you colleague know “as I am sure you know from the research, not everyone has to know their letters to read. That’s why we have to have IEPs.” and walk away. Don’t wait for a response. ❤️ Keep up the good work!

I hate when this happens, be strong. Get witnesses, record the session, and continue to be their advocates. I truly despise this behavior from people who are supposed to instill hope and encouragement In children

I always tell my kids that nobody can take whatever they learn from them away. It is partially self confidence and them wanting to learn. Try and get that child in a different class with a better teacher.

Ask the parent to give you written permission to record audio of her child reading. Then you can use a program like the showme app and take a picture of each sight word. Then record the student’s voice as he or she reads the words that are on your screen of the iPad. You can also just lay the iPad on the desk and record the audio if you don’t want to use the app with the video being blacked out because the camera will not be used or put tape on the camera as you record. Then you can celebrate the child’s success with the parent by sharing the audio and then use it to show the negative teacher how off base they are.

How discouraging to that student! I would address this with that teacher immediately! Students are capable of being successful given the right teacher who believes in them! You are a blessing to that student… keep believing in him!

I’m getting angry just reading this! This is one where you e-mail the other teacher. Put it on paper and tell her in a professional way, how unprofessional she is being. Let her know that the first e-mail is for her only, but any subsequent w-mails will entail the administrators being Cc’d. If you have already said something to her about this before. Go on and reference those previous dates in the e-mail and CC: the administrator now. You want to give her the courtesy of discussing this, if you haven’t, but if she gets hostile or aggressive in anyway, I suggest going ahead and bringing in an administrator. You’re giving her more respect than she’s giving that child. She can’t be allowed to tear that child down. Also, make sure that you explain to the student how well he’s doing & how proud you are of him.

A lot of our students don’t generalize their skills. I also have a student who is learning to decode sight words and has about 15 of the kinder Dolch words mastered, but only in my classroom. If I take her in the hallway or another classroom, she can’t/won’t decode the same 15 words. A lot of teachers/aides/parents don’t realize that some of our students with disabilities take longer to fully master a skill and may only show mastery in certain locations or with certain people for a while before generalizing.

I have a student in a similar situation. I was told she can hardly read but she has cruised through all of the Dolch Sight words and nouns. Her regular ELA teacher is trying to hold her back to 2nd-grade words. We just keep pressing on and moving forward. I am going to give her a book to read with mom or with us and work on new vocabulary just like we would with regular 2nd-grade level kids. Do not let the poor attitudes of others destroy your sparkle!!!!

Not actively looking and, so far, I've enjoyed my experience with my current firm. My only concern is that, if I ever wanted to leave, it seems like the exit opportunities are non existent (or, frankly, they suck). Are there good exit opportunities with Protiviti?
