I applied for a job at a WPP agency. It looks like they’re going to send an offer my way. However I definitely stretched the truth in my resume. In the background check what do they look for? Do they verify if you graduate college, your employment or is it just criminal and sexual misconduct?

All depends on the extent to which you misrepresented yourself. If you come clean, expect to be fired. Or if a reference contradicts what you took credit for. Simply having a conscience doesn’t make up for the lack of character this shows. Life isn’t just binary. It’s not 0s and 1s where adding value gets you a pass on more important things, like having a moral backbone. And admitting to insecurities doesn’t make you weak in an interview. It makes you human. You should take the conscience you’ve shown in your post and turn it into something real that you live by.

Why do people do this!? And how much do you want to bet this OP does far worse?

Now I’m curious what truth was stretched 🤔 lol

like

It was an anecdote about a client and being closer to them than I really was. SMH

It will depend on how obvious it is that you stretched the truth and who among your references knows that you did, or if the people hiring you know people with whom you have worked. If you were going to be a critical member of my team, I would be calling anyone I know who may have worked with you in the past and I would have found out. If you are more junior you can probably get away it. It’s crappy behavior on your part (smh), but you will most likely be fine.

Thank you. In this process I’ve developed good, solid relationships. Again, I can do the role and can excel in it (per hiring manager and those I’ve interviewed with). The Insecurities, however, got the best of me. Hopefully I get through this process unscathed.

Background check if through third-party will verify all of the above

Ahhh, okay. Luckily I worked at the places I said and don’t have any criminal/sexual misconduct. However I definitely stretched the truth.

You may have put yourself in a really bad position. WPP is cracking down on this stuff, I was recently asked about a new hire which opened up a massive can of worms- and led to them getting fired within two weeks of employment.

Don’t drown on a glass of water. Looks like you already learned your lesson. Dont come clean, just slowly “clarify” as work moves. If they question you, say they misunderstood you. Dont stress. You’re not the first one to stretch the truth... many wealthy billionaires do so all the time to bump their stock, etc...

What's the best way to prepare a business case presentation? I've been invited to a final round interview for a medical device company as a process optimization consultant. They sent me a client case study. In the case there are pain points of the client, and some numbers to analyze their workflow and recommend them to use their medical devices for process improvement. In a rapidly growing practice, and perhaps 2 years from (non-equity) “partnership”. I like my team and the work I do, but I’ve only ever been a consultant and am tempted to jump to industry to try it out. Interviewing for a Fortune 20 company and applying to others. Maybe FAANG. Let’s say I’m 60% driven by comp, 40% driven by impact. Am I crazy for looking to leave? Should I just continue to ride this one-way train?

I’ve always gotten the advice that when you want to switch jobs you should take interviews from places you’re not actually interested in, so you can understand your value in the market and have better negotiating power. I’m doing that rn - took a couple interviews to gauge my skills, my market value, and see what I need to work on for interviews that I actually care about. However, I feel really guilty about wasting their time and going all the way knowing I’ll just say no at the end. Wwyd?

We have a fixed PTO time plan (very generous) but leftover rates by now are enormous. It’s gonna be about 160 hours of unused PTO per employee in the end of the year, and we only rollover 80. We thought about rolling over everything, but then accruals get too high. Does anyone have creative ideas how we can roll over excessive hours and don’t make them wages at the same time...

Evaluating an offer from a series a startup - base is $160k and equity is about half of that or .15% of the company today. It’s a huge step down for me in total comp (~65k less than what I make today) but I think company has a good chance of success. How can I negotiate more equity?

Any thoughts on negotiating more vacation time with a new company? Manager leaving Accenture for a specialty firm in Public Sector. Two firms competing for me have offers on the table. The one I like told me they just don't negotiate vacation and everyone from the C-suite down gets three weeks. Losing two weeks a year of vacation sounds awful! Any thought on negotiating? I have a pretty strong position right now. I'm open to options. Though they kind of already nixed the idea of unpaid PTO.
