I applied & interviewed at a small firm in JUNE. I thought it went well & the owner & I knew each other from previous cases we handled. They ghosted me so I moved on. Mid November comes & I get a call from the paralegal “are you still looking for a job?” I thought that ship sailed but let’s see what they offer. It’s the holidays & I’ve got time off already scheduled. They’ve made a tempting offer but are not flexible on the time off & seem desperate. Like they want someone to put out fires.

I would pass. If they’re like this with a potential start date after ghosting you for 5 months, what is going to stop them acting like this in the future re time off?

like

It seems like they’re already putting you in a stressful situation and you don’t even work there.

likefunny

Pass, they seem disorganized and are scrambling. Would not want to be apart of that, especially at a small firm where resources are limited. The fact the paralegal called instead of the partner is another red flag.

like

That is a very bad sign. I have a small firm and if I wanted to hire, I wouldn’t have my paralegal calling.

like

I am leaning towards passing, for all reasons ^ stated in the replies. I agree, after ghosting me for almost six months, no call or anything… I was so surprised to hear from them. Even more surprised to see that they’re being pushy about the start date and not flexible on my scheduled time off. Before making a formal written offer yesterday, the paralegal called me after 5pm yesterday to say “she said if you start tomorrow or Wednesday, she will pay you 90k (10k more than in the eventual written offer).” I chuckled and said I would never do that to my current employer or any employer.

like

$90k isn’t that much money and isn’t worth the hassle. If she tripled that then maybe

Just sent the email declining. Thank you all for the advice.

My firm is in the same situation where we need additional associates yesterday due to work coming in, but I can’t imagine pushing back on an attorney giving reasonable notice to their firm or at the very least being open to compromise on that front. If they are as desperate as it seems (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) I would imagine they’ll eventually come around if you hold firm saying you need to give 3 weeks notice and will be either taking your previously scheduled time off or need to be made whole and that it’s non negotiable.

like

Can I ask where your firm located/practice area? I’ve been applying here and there but no firms seem to be in dire enough need to take a chance on a recent grad gov atty looking to switch practice areas lol

like

PASS

Maybe I’m old school but them waiting so long makes them look disorganized AH… plus ghosting you then not having the courtesy to call you themselves after being so discourteous and ghosting you… I’d boldly negotiate an even higher salary than offered. The worst they can say is no, and I take it you don’t want to work there anyway, so you have nothing to lose

I was in a similar situation. Interviewed for a position with a focus on IP Law (which i had some experience with and wanted to work in that field). They changed the dates of the interviews 2-3 times, took them forever to reply that in the end they thought I didn't have enough background with IP Law only to call me back 5 months later with an offer asking if I'm still interested. I passed.

like

Honestly unless you really want to put out the fires and are okay with the work it's going to take / okay with the possibility that the firm is dumping in an impossible task on you I would pass. Life is too short I had a similar situation where I nearly had a heart attack because of the stress involved

like

Sounds like they pursued someone else, which fell through, and now they’re circling back to you. Don’t do it

like

Yeah, came here to say they burned through their first choice already. You dodged a bullet OP.

like

Imho they seem disorganized at best. I personally would pass.

like

Any thoughts? I figure I have leverage considering they sought me out after ghosting me. But they still don’t seem flexible about my demands. They want me to give as little notice possible and start ASAP. I’ve told them I need to give at least 3 weeks to a months notice. The time off is important too, but they are not flexible. The offer states I would need to “cover my billable hour requirement for any time off in the first 6 months.”

Do you have advice on how to interview better with Amazon?

My résumé and portfolio are great, and I’ve been asked to interview with Amazon for 4 different teams now. However, it seems like I’m not making it past the first 1:1 interview. 3 out of 4 have resulted in not the right fit for reasons unknown; they don’t provide any feedback either. I have been invited for a new interview today with another team, and I am hoping 4th time is the charm. Any tips on how to do better next time?
