I asked for a 10k increase on the sign on bonus, and they came back with a 10k increase on base.

Is an increase in one better than the other? Bonuses do get taxed more right?

Bonus also has to be repaid if you leave within 1 year (possibly 2 depending on amount). Base is a sure thing and helps into the future. It’s possible that they found it easier to push you up a cohort than to get approval for additional bonus.

Bonus is better for up front payment. But base had more advantages in my opinion - it is the basis for 401(k) matches, standard / inflation pay rises, on target bonus payments, baseline for future moves, annual payment vs. one-time, etc

HR is tired of candidates rejecting their offers as well. I have seen less games these days. Things are changing for the better. Offer the highest you can, to get the candidate to make it a no regrets decision, reduce % of attrition

like

Take the 10k increase in base, it’s the better offer now and in the long run.

Always take base increase. Your bonuses in the future will be more because of it.

10k in base is MUCH better, especially if you plan on staying at least two years lol

Bonuses do not get taxed more. They are withheld at a higher rate and you are refunded when you file.

likehelpful

Of course getting a bonus could push you into a higher tax bracket and effective tax rate than you would have been in without the bonus. But that’s a first world problem.

I hope you aren’t doing any finance related projects for your clients….

Wow this company is doing you a favor!

Is this rhetorical?

Did they make a mistake?! 😯 $10K on base IS A MUCH BETTER DEAL than $10K bonus. You must be bringing something they truly want. Take it and run!

Technically $10k today is better than $10k tomorrow

A good point…the OP was canned for stupidity, so it was a legit question.

Yes, tho not sure how anybody has to ask this question

Crazy how some people on here think. The IRS does not know nor care whether income is a base or a bonus or money from your grandma’s knitting business. Income is income. If it’s taxed higher you get it back. $10k on base is obviously better than $10k on a bonus because you’ll get that $10k every year. Seems obvious….

like

To a certain degree (I.e., they don’t differentiate for income from payroll but do for capital gains)

Always take base over bonus

like

Either you are not serious or they are not serious

They thought you said “base” . It’s the only reasonable ask .. who asks for more money in bonus ? That’s extra money for the IRS .

like

Company withholds from bonus payroll. Don’t forget to alert the 401k folks if you want them to take out money from your bonus

Is this a real question? 🤣

funnylike

If you have to ask this question you are in the wrong biz. Base increase is always better

like

i had same thing happen and 10k on salary is 100 times better because it’s permanent you’ll get more $$$ Bonus almost half goes to taxes

like

10k salary is better because of perpetuity.

Ignore A2 on taxes. They don't understand how taxes work.

I work as a clinical care manager (LCSW) with an insurance company. Wondering if there is a better way of finding out salary information for other companies out there that have similar positions? I was told it’s because it’s based on cost of living where I am residing (not sure if that was legit or just an excuse).

Salary for Technical Director for NYC/PA area?

Wanted some clarification about TCS salary structure Job level offered is C3B

1) Monthly performance pay is 9.25 percent of CTC. Recruiter is saying this is fixed salary. Is this component always fixed or there are scenarios when company can deduct this? Even if one is on bench, is this fixed?

2) Performance Bonus / Quarterly variable is 12.7 percent of CTC. Is this too high or standard for all people at C3B level?

3) Together both make variable 22% of CTC. Is it normal or too high?

Recruiter asked if she could up my original stated salary request discussed by 13℅ after the final interview before final approval sign-off. But there was a talk to needing to immediately accept the offer and stop talking to anyone else. Overall the offer is really good at a good company, 59% increase in base slry

With that being said, do you think I should take advantage of the situation and take the first offer? Always wondering if something is going on behind the scenes to screw me over.

Is leaving 6 months into first year too soon? I make 85k as A1 in AAS. Recently got an offer from LinkedIn for their finance/accounting department which pays 105k base and 10k signing bonus. I know more money is better, but I’d be making ~96k as A2, ~120k as S1, etc. I’m scared of low industry raises and potentially pigeon holing myself too soon.
