Potential in-house-brand-side CD gig for a growing brand in a niche/cool category. They haven't done any real branding of note aside from more "how to"-ish/functional/hardworking YouTube videos, but they have big branding aspirations (like every brand says). Expecting the following question in final interview: what would you do in your first 30/60 days?
So, what would YOU do in your first 30/60 days?
I'll share some thoughts in comments so it's not just HEY FISHIES TELL ME WHAT TO SAY! :)

You’re getting what you asked for: connected to the design dept plus an interview. Go into the interview with confidence & give it all you’ve got.
I get it 100%, believe me! You’ve got this.
If your previous boss didn’t like/respect you, they never would have made the referral! Be prepared & confident and give it your best effort
Agreed
I don’t think they’d take the time if they weren’t serious. Is it for an actual role that is open or just so you can network? Either way, be confident and positive and you never know what it may lead to!
I don't think they have entry level open roles on their website, but I asked my boss if there are any opportunities/roles anyway and that's how I got referred
You’re getting an interview. Doesn’t matter if you think it’s a “pity interview” - you’re making connections that hopefully will pay off. Just focus on nailing the interview.
Nowadays the best way to be successful is through networking/ who you know.
This is just networking, not pity lol that’s how it works. If anything, I’d say at this point, a job offer is yours to lose. They’re more than likely to hire you if you go in confidently and you present well and knowledgeable (to the extent you are expected at entry level) and eager to learn/grow.
A similar thing happened before when another company dragged on the process for three months (I even did the design project) but got rejected. their reasoning was that they increased their budget so they wanted someone who's more experienced. Ever since then my confidence went down a bit because it was a job I really want. Your advice seems really fair though, I'll try my best to be confident. Thank you! :)
Even if it is, it doesn't matter. You walk in with confidence and knock the interview out of the park regardless. Doesn't matter how you get the interview, just how well you actually interview.
if they connected you, it’s because they believed in you they’re not gonna put someone out there who could ruin their reputation. And just look at it as a learning experience regardless. Every time you interview, you get better at it and you learn from it and you get more confident or learn what questions will be asked.
Pro
A contact is a contact. They like you enough to do what you asked and based on this it means you are doing well enough for them to want to keep you at the company.
Who cares what their motives were. You now get a chance to make your elevator pitch for why you would be good for the other department.
This is how most people get hired
Will you like to work party time with great flexibility also for an extra income?
Party time?
Make as many connections as you can! Even if you’re not fit for the role, they might be able to reference you to another company or agency that’s looking for work that’s appropriate regarding your skill set. Good luck!!!
that's the thing though, I'm not qualified for the open roles they have because they are looking for someone who has 5-7 years of industry experience and I have none. So I don't know what the interview is going to be about. Maybe a position they haven't posted on their website? I'm not sure
no leader has time for pity interviews. your skills got you there. chin up, you will crush this.
Ahhh, update: I actually talked to them, and they said they don't have any openings that I'm qualified for and told me to come back when I have gained experience because it's really hard to get into the said company (in a corporate lingo ofc). The only reason I got an interview was because of my boss properly and she doesn't know this happened so not her fault. I guess the creative recruiter should have emailed me and told me you know....
