I asked one of my employees where they viewed themselves in 5 years and they couldn't give me a straight answer. Sign that they're leaving?

Bro none of us know what our lives or the world will look like in 5 years. Plenty of people will leave your company in that span — ask this question because you’re curious about their lives, not because you’re trying to sniff them out

No. That's a pointless question. The only people who know where they want to be in 5 years are heading into med and law school.

Yeah if you asked me that question, I wouldn't even be thinking about work. I'd be thinking about my kids and family

like

Why don't you just ask what you really want to know. How passionate are you about this field....obviously ask it in a different way so you can get the truth

like

Likely they don't have a plan. For now. A coaching opportunity that may enable you to develop them so they can leave you but want to stay.

Hah, when that question is asked of me I say I'm retired in France. That's too far ahead for anyone in this economy. A better question would be, if you could design your perfect job what would it be. And then the company knows if the role they are in is appropriate for them or if they have an opportunity to grow them into that perfect role.

helpful

If anything I think it means they're honest. When people ask me this question I feel like I'm scrambling for an answer that I'm not necessarily confident in. I would ask a more targeted question about their hopes for their next year at the company to see if there's anything you can help them accomplish which will motivate them to stick around.

No one ever knows how to answer that question. I wouldn't put too much weight on their answer.

like

Solid no. Tell them how valuable they are to you, and say you wanted to make sure they are happy with what they are doing.

No way. I have no idea where I will be or what I will be doing in five years. I have no current plans to leave my job. Five years is a long time away.

Perhaps a sign your employees don't have much drive and have become complacent (or burned out). Perhaps you need to starts helping them map out possible goals and futures to get them out of their malaise.

I am joining EY at rank 42 . What relocation reimbursement cap can I expect as nothing is explicitly mentioned in the offer letter. Also, my previous firm is making me pay back the retention bonus and also recovering the certification cost since I am leaving with an year of certifications. Will any of this amount be covered under notice pay reimbursement ?

Where do you think education and entry level jobs are going to go in the next year given the current situation / new variant of COVID etc?

Would you make a switch: 8 YOE, MCOL (Texas), currently a M at 165k base + 10% bonus. Up for SM this year Offered director level - 200k base + 25% bonus + relocation to HCOL (Boston) Company is growing and the job matches what I want to do in industry but I'm not sure if the pay makes sense with the COL difference

All-my dad has been guilt tripping me into visiting him. He is 8 hours away driving without stopping. I am pregnant and am not traveling anywhere where I can’t drive non stop - not even seeing my in laws 90 minutes away. I know it sounds crazy but that is where I am. He half jokingly said I could wear Depends. Please tell me I’m not crazy and that it’s okay for me to not go and my dad should be at least somewhat understanding. We don’t have the best relationship.
