I believe MBA has somewhere lost its value. In the age of technology, one should pursue Technology related courses rather than spending a hefty amount on MBA. What's your view on this fishes?

I went from making $60k (pre b school) to $250k (two-years post b school). From where I’m standing that’s a pretty solid value proposition.

You don’t start an MBA because of the syllabus, you start because of the networking. Business schools know how to do exploit this brilliantly. The question is, do technology courses provide you the same? Remember that in the majority of the cases, one doesn’t become a CEO because of its technical skills but it’s ability to sell a vision!

My mentor is a CEO of a multi-billion dollar company, doesn’t have an MBA, and says there is no need for one if you’re smart enough to figure things out on the job 🤷🏻‍♀️

SA1 that’s where I’m at - MBA being tough to justify. I happened into consulting via a very untraditional path and, to your point , have increased my salary 400% in 6 yrs. I am interested in an MBA, still, just to learn more about business and finance

My MBA had strong data analytics components. We covered (just to name a few): - SPSS - Excel modeling - SQL - R - Data Visualization & Tableau At the same time we covered Finance/Accounting, Marketing, Strategy, etc. The value of an MBA is that it is both advanced and general. The people I graduated with can manage a team in most areas of business AND have meaningful conversations cross-functionally. I don’t know why everyone thinks the MBAs value is gone. Firms still pay for the experience an MBA provides.

MBA = network / soft skills / leadership, tech focused degree = hard knowledge I have an MBA - loved it . Helped me switch my career, build my leadership skills, introduced me to a range of people from all over the world and in various industries, and find my fiancé

It’s a piece of paper that you pay for because it increases your chances at getting into institutions that value that piece of paper.

Practically, the value of MBA is more in mid-career rather than early career. And that too, it should only be done by people who genuinely want to make a move into management. See tech really pays well, but if you want to run a company or a function within a company, you need to know marketing, management accounting, financial accounting, supply chain(if your org needs one), PM, etc. stuff

Those sound like 2 different things. 1. MBA has lost value in the sense that banking and consulting jobs, where most MBAs went, are no longer as desirable as they once were, and tech is often a better alternative. But an MBA can still be very valuable. 2. Yes, a CS degree could yield better outcomes than an MBA. Engineers typically get paid more than MBAs, so having an MIT/Stanford CS masters degree would be better than an MIT/Stanford MBA when you look at same level compensation. But fewer people are good enough to get those CS degrees, so an MBA is an easier path to a 6 figure job than a CS degree.

#2 is highly company dependent.

If you want to work in large, mainstream establishment company's organizations, an MBA still seems like the network is valuable. Same thing for some PE, VC environemnts. Outsider perspective is its useless if you want to work in smaller organizations. Look at Quantic if your really need an MBA for content and actually learning the technical gaps you might have in business knowledge.

What a broad statement for a nuanced problem... I spent years in consulting, got an MBA in a top school and pivoted careers into technology with little to no debt (merit scholarship). I think the value was pretty high. Not everyone has my ideal situation but everyone should do the calculation on their own and determine if the return is worth it

1yr of work experience at MBB -- prior experience was in non-profit / community development. What exits could allow me to stay in the private sector that aren't consulting? Any ideas?
