I bought an EV cost around 70k total and my husband is mad about it. It’s my first new car I buy for myself, I used to just take public transportation but it become inconvenient because I live outside the city. My base is 110k and bonus around 10-15% and he make around 60k. We pay 2.1k for mortgage but rent out 2 rooms which we get additional 1k/month. He already paid off his car. So I don’t know why he’s so mad about it and how to explain for him that I can handle it myself.

agree with other comments but also $70K car on $110K income is expensive!

like

Yes, I also believe the car is a trigger, because I don’t think any reasonable person will cancel his wife’s car registration without saying anything. I just don’t know exactly what is the issue.

Did you discuss this before and he wasn’t on board then or you just came home one day with a new car? If it’s the latter I’d be pretty pissed too…

like

I was so mad about it. I didn’t know until I took the car to get an inspection sticker and the car didn’t come up in the system. Sometime, I feel that he doesn’t want to talk to me but that’s another topic

I think it totally depends on how you handle finances as a married couple. Regardless of whether you logistically maintain separate bank accounts, married couples are naturally both impacted by large expenditures unless you don’t plan to retire together, vacation together, possibly raise children together. But if you have a mutual agreement that you both contribute certain amounts to your joint retirement and other shared expenses, and that you can both use the remainder for whatever then that’s a different story.

like

Sounds like you aren’t on the same page about finances, which I think is important in a marriage if you’re planning to share your life together for the long term. Either you both agree that you’re both free to spend your “own” money however you want, or you don’t. Sounds like perhaps that was the past agreement and now he’s changing his mind and wants to make joint decisions? In my marriage we would make such a big financial decision together, but if that’s not what you two agreed to do, then I’d want to understand what exactly he’s upset about.

like

Real question is do y’all have separate money or joint money? And were y’all planning on any big expenses soon??

like

He sounds like a dick and trying to run your life. You can afford it tell him to mind your business since this your own separate money

I know some people are being critical of how much you spent on the car, but I with two incomes paying a mortgage that nets to $1.1k it’s not bad. I would be mad if I was in your position. If you’re the only one paying for it, and he initially agreed, then he has no right to be mad.

like

I think I didn’t mention but my husband is a veteran and he has subsided from government about $1.4k/month. So I didn’t think it’s a bad idea to buy a EV car when the gas is so expensive right now.

Uhh I would be pissed if my husband committed to a $70k car 😂

like

I would be mad at you too. 70k for one car on your income is not a good financial decision.

like

I did read your comments in the thread after my comment. Your husband should never have agreed initially to this. So honestly the mess and miscommunication is his fault. If he had a problem with it then he should have said something in the very beginning.

like

Is it one that you can also get the 7500 fee tax credit? If so maybe that could smooth some of it over?

I got my $40k Jeep Wrangler when I just started my career and earned $60k many years ago. I know many people would say it was a bad financial decision, yes it was a little bit stressful at beginning but we were totally fine shortly after. It was my dream car and I am still driving it today. We have been having so much fun with the car and created so many precious memories. Don’t let people tell you it was a bad decision, it is your money your car your life, so just enjoy it. PS with today’s gas cost, EV is a great investment! I think it was a good call!

like

Thank you for sharing your thought. Yes, I think it may sound a bad financial decision, but it’s my dream car too. We only live one and I has been try so hard to get where I’m here now. I started working since high school and worked through my years in college and master, paid off all my student loans before graduated (I have 4 years scholarship and 50% scholarships for masters). Then I got 60% salary increase after 3 years working. However, since my husband is not in the profession so he doesn’t know 😔

You are fine.

You know your numbers and finances.

Some people get nervous at big number changes like that, so he needs to let you take the wheel and chill.

Congratulations.

I had a relationship like that. Turned out he was threatened by the fact that I made more money and didn’t want me “flaunting my success” in his face. The best thing I ever did was drop that dead weight.

Got an offer for Electronic Arts (EA) Manager for North America (Canada) remote for 100k base CAD, 15 percent bonus and around low 40ks RSU (assuming it's USD). How much higher can the base be in Canada for EA for a Manager role? Base seems low even at 110 CAD. It's a corporate role so not anything technical or product related. Most or all the more senior managers are in the USA. Electronic Arts (EA)
