I brought a client to my firm and trial is coming up soon. My boss is having a more senior person try the case with me since I haven’t tried a case in this specific state before. I am not new to law and have been practicing 9 years. This senior person is a woman and has been the most patronizing, rude person to deal with. She constantly tries to blame me for “mistakes” that are either not really mistakes and/or she’s just as at fault for or more so than me. See comments for more.

Maybe schedule some strategy/discussion/get to know you time. That way you can sit down and level set. It can be uncomfortable, but I’ve said to colleagues before - it seems as if there is some confusion on roles that is creating tension. I really want to be sure we’re operating efficiently and effectively and that the client sees us as a unified team so that he/she/it will be confident as we head into trial. Can we just take some time to reset and refresh?

Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. But - at least you can say you did everything you could.

A1, agree with you; however, it is business I brought with me to the firm. Most people who do this are the lead trial attorney on the file in my experience.

If she is in charge, she is in charge.

Play nice.

Do the best you can for the client.

Be the bigger person unless you feel strongly.

Choose your battles wisely.

My understanding is that we were to be co lead trial counsel for this case. I’ve deferred to her on a lot and have only disagreed when I thought my license was being jeopardized and/or the clients interests were not being served.

like

When I disagree with her on something she refuses to hear what I have to say and instructs me to essentially shut up and follow her “instructions.” She’s been wrong on both factual and legal issues. I raised this to my boss (a man) who seems to not want to get involved too much. Any advice? I’m exhausted dealing with this woman.

She is of counsel, not a partner. But I agree she does not view us that way.

Currently at an agency I don’t like, but the work is fun (although uninspiring). Have an offer at a much better agency, but the work would be with a traditionally un-fun client. Do I make the jump?

I left a great team and high-visibility, high impact project with a client that loved me for a few more $$.

Had I stayed, I would have been festering on comp and constantly worried about my financial future.
Since I've left, I feel financially secure but listless and bored with a lame team on what I've discovered is a skeezy upsell.

Anyone else had to deal with this? Did you boomerang back?

I’ve spent a long time working in nonprofits and higher education and I am so excited that I’ll finally be leaving. I feel like I’ve been in a cult for over 10 years and I feel extremely jaded and played. Yes I know many of you are going to laugh at me for believing that working for nonprofits or education was a good thing, but I sincerely did think that what I was doing was for the greater good. I’m embarrassed I used to think that way. I can’t wait to leave and never come back. 🏃🏾‍♀️

What are some ways I can support the moms and make it an enjoyable experience for them? I would love for the families to be able to come, as it is out of town.

I quit. I was respectful. Thankfully, every person I have told has been so nice, and I wasn't immediately bounced out by my leadership (which has happened), but I have been surprised by my own bittersweet tears. If they actually cared, why didn't they say so sooner? I gave so much, and I was consumed by this organization. I invested in them, but my investment and dedication were not reciprocated, which is why I ever even entertained leaving. I don't know why it hurts, but it really, really does.
