I can honestly say that working from home these last few years has been the best thing that’s happened to my career as a producer. I never realized how distracting being in an office was. Now, I actually can focus on bidding, scheduling, reviewing contracts, and all of the stressful parts of production WITHOUT having to factor in code switching and a commute. I left my agency producer role for a fully remote producing role and I’m just….thrilled. Anyone else refuse to go back to office? 😩

It’s allowed me to be a better producer and a better dad.

This is one of the most important aspects/responses. I completely agree and it did solve the “personal-professional life balance of a producer” paradox. I am being part of my kid’s development, instead of being that weekend guy who can barely interact during the week. I even value the fact that I can involve my kid (somehow) into what I do for a living; it brings more realness for them.

I love work from home. My job is so split between ‘go go go’ and waiting around for comments. It’s so nice to be at home for the waiting around times now.

like

Same feelings as everyone else. Remote work is so much better in general. Back in office I always got frantic calls from my desk phone, or people swung by my desk all the time to pick my brain or get status on our projects, let alone the many meetings we had to attend that were mostly unnecessary. Work at home stopped nearly all that. Or at least gave me a lot more control over what I do throughout the day. The only time I prefer being onsite is if we have some fine tuning edit sessions. It gets annoying with back and forth emails or pings when your team isn’t available for a live edit session. Otherwise, I hope to be working from home like 90% of the time moving forward after the pandemic.

like

100% agree. The office is so distracting too. Being able to focus has made me so much better/more buttoned up. Office has been “open” for a few months now but I haven’t gone in once.

like

Ditto. A few days here and there to collaborate is cool but 5 days a week in an office seems absurd this day and age.

like

I’ll never work from an office again

like

Totally agree! I go to the office when I want the distraction lol or when most meeting attendees are in the office. But when I actually have to do the work, I’d rather stay home and focus! Wonder if WK will stay hybrid or if they’ll enforce a back to work policy..

like

Same here. It’s the best. We ebb and flow with how busy we are and I agree it’s so freeing to be home during those slow times. I feel like I have full control over my career and life and it flows into one how I want it to

like

Looks like I’m in the minority! I go into the office to focus because I get too distracted at home. I like having both options, though, for busy and slow days.

like

Same.

like

🙋‍♀️ I have turned down roles that wanted even a hybrid presence. I have helped my producers plan remote shoots and it was so nice to not have office distractions.

like

The best part is not having to book conference rooms, herd the whole team into them, and dial in with the landline. What a dumb waste of time that was!

like

Same! I lost like 10 lbs immediately after lockdown because I was holding onto so much stress, lack of sleep, and unnecessary set food/ office mindless eating. I’m so much happier remote! I am a better, more stable and confident producer because of it.

like

Completely agree with everything you said! The office was always extremely distracting, and producers can really work from ANYWHERE! Plus, being remote allows you to literally be in multiple places at once. I can be in an edit AND a record at the same time! All while bidding for my next shoot. Efficiency for producers has gone WAY UP since working remote, and companies can’t possibly expect us to keep this up if we’re once again chained to a desk or an edit suite, when 50million other things are going on. Never going back.

like

Same! Just started a new remote job yesterday because my company wanted me back in the office. NOPE.

like

Where? Are they still hiring? My projects will move slower once we are RTO - tack on 3 hours for commute, getting ready, breakfast, etc! Stupid waste of time!

like

I understand your reaction. Producers are one of the few who work best alone.

Leaving my glorious M role for an L7 nontechnical position at Amazon. For those looking to exit consulting, here are things that worked for me: 1. Be patient. I looked for over a year before finding this and dealt with tons of ghosting, rejections and discussions that were a waste of time. 2. Don't filter out locations. If the role looks like a good fit, apply. In my case this was a really niche job that is tough to match so we worked out a compromise where I won't need to relocate. (cont'd)

I had multiple mediations recently. I do management side employment law. Overall I’m walking away feeling like what the heck are we paying the mediators for? I’m tired of the mediators saying they don’t want to hear about the merits of the case. The merits are DIRECTLY tied to the amount of settlement authority I have. I feel like our clients are getting worked way more than the plaintiffs side. Also plaintiffs have followed up every single settlement with “can we get the funds before holiday?”
