I can use R to wrangle, tidy up and plot pretty complex visualizations. Is this still an applicable skillset to a Data scientist ? Looking into "Applied Scientist" roles in FANGM and curious if i should brush up these skills

Yes it’s applicable but there is much more to data science than exploratory data analysis. If that is the summary of your technical skills I’d also recommend data analyst or business analyst.

Can you build models, algorithms for complex tasks like forecasting?
If you're just using R for cleaning/transforming and visualizing data, the answer is no.

No. It's not even a data engineer. No one really engineers in R, unless DS-centric teams. Analyst is good enough...

Also, I bet you could do some simple regression and dimension reduction.

For applied scientist you're gonna need very solid ML theory, stats, and algorithms background. Knowing some R syntax is probably helpful for the job but getting past the interviews is a different ballgame

AS requires an ability to identify, prototype, and grow projects around data, usually with ML. Interview reflects that. Data viz might come up as a brief aside, but even that's unlikely.

Data viz can come up in business analyst and easier DS interviews, but still shouldn't be your main focus unless it's your specialty (not the case for most).

For analyst roles, you're move likely to get asked about GUI viz tools rather than code, like in dashboarding and analytics suites.

The term data scientist is pretty broad so there are definitely roles out there that would qualify you as one. Certainly better than “Consultant” 😉 ain’t that right C1

like

Maybe a data analyst?

Have you considered building github profile Incase you don’t hv it? Suggest start there and do few projects in perso/churn/customer journeys etc. deepen ml technique application, related stats etc and try.

Hi Fishes,
Need advice.
I am currently working at a prod based company as a QA Engineer in a maintenance project. I joined 7 months back. They offerred me an SDET+DevOps role. And all this while I was mostly working on manual. There is no scope and value to automation in this project.

I have an offer from a service based company with 25% hike from my current ctc. They have offered a API automation project.

Is it wise to leave now or should I wait for an year?

Am I wrong to think this is an oxymoron? Surely how can one delegate to their large team and be hands on? Past few years of consulting I’ve strongly focused on managing large teams and we definitely were discouraged from being hands on tbh
