Initially I was going to be all snarky and say that’s nothing compared with trying to work with a 4yr old demanding your constant attention. But the truth is that this pandemic sucks for everybody and for different reasons. It’s easy for me to think that this is so hard with kids and that back when I was single, this would’ve been a cakewalk. And maybe it would have been compared to now, but there’s no way I could have known that back then. Ten years ago, this also would’ve seemed like the end of the world to me and I would’ve been terrified.
As a freelancer I can tell you that the lack of structure can be VERY hard for some people. You need to try to replicate the environment you’re usually most productive and motivated in: Set up a schedule, set your alarm. Take a shower and get dressed. Get a routine going. Set up deadlines and goals for yourself. Make time for exercise, even if it’s just jumping jacks and push ups indoors. Routine is what will keep you sane. People think freelancers work in their pijamas all day and that sounds awesome until you try it. Freelancers usually have some structure they set up for themselves, otherwise they get nothing done. Hang in there and remember that this too shall pass.

Whether we are in a lonely and sad apartment with 0 contact, or bombarded with kids around distracting us and needing our attention, we are all suffering, trying to feel normal in a workspace that is anything but.

I’m in the unique position of having both, as my sister/roommate has her son only half the time (and I play a major role in his caretaking when he is here). Both scenarios presented their own set of challenges. My only advice OP is to dedicate the hours that make the most sense to work. Set up a dedicated area with candles and coffee shop music and good lighting and get shit done. But then set up hours and breaks that you can use to relax. It’s the only thing that’s working for me when I’m in the “no kids” scenario

... do my own thing at home. I was already ready to quit my job and was looking for something else when this all started, now I’m stuck with it for who knows how long. Today I slept until 11 and now I’m baking. This project is due Friday and I’ll end up working until 3am to do it. Fuuuuuuck.

Focusing has been a lifelong problem for me. In my experience, the only things that really work are time pressure and having a plan ahead of time. So, when I get a project I try to schedule concepting sessions and check-ins with my partner and/or CD. And I also try to plan out my day the night before. Like write in down on a piece of paper, hour by hour what my day is going to look like.

like

I may have to make that hour by hour plan. I’m normally great at getting stuff done, but lately I keep thinking, "the video games are right there..."

Well think about this: I'm a freelancer living alone in NYC, paying expensive rent, my freelance got cancelled, I got no leads, I have no pets, I got divorced recently, my dating life got killed by coronavirus, and now I'm also getting audited for 2017, so now I also get to play an accountant! Count your blessings, as they say.

Thank you for the emotional support ♥️

I need career advice. I jumped into pharma from consumer at the beginning of covid, right after I was promoted to a mid-level copy role. My current team is a disaster (crazy hours, lots of incompetence, nightmare client). I was recently offered a senior level position at another pharma agency, but I miss consumer and ultimately want to get back to it. Is it dumb to turn down this job given that I'm so unhappy where I am? Should I stay where I am and keep looking for consumer roles?

Hello - I am an audit manager and want to get suggestion on how to politely decline/respond to late night meeting invitations by the US team? I have talked with the partner and senior manager live that I can’t make it to calls after 9:30pm but every now and then (almost every alternate day) they schedule some client meetings for past my availability. I think they will understand if I can’t make it but wanted to just gather suggestions as what what can be a polite way to decline such meetings.
