I can’t get this return to balance. Everything ties besides the partner contributions/allocations. I’ve been spinning my wheels for some time. Should i submit to my reviewer?

Just ask your reviewer for help to get it across the finish line

like

Ask them if they can hop on a virtual call and look at your screen while you walk them through it. They will have to look at it anyway. This shows them that you are aware of the situation and are trying to solve it rather than just passing the buck.

Ask another associate or reviewer. Better than spinning your wheels

Are you sure you’re looking at tax basis versus US GAAP basis? We have to change reporting or defer to next year.

Personally I always appreciate a note in the email or a sticky note on the pdf, pointing out the problem and what you’ve done to try and fix it. Then I’ll usually walk the staff through the issue and how I fixed it.

like

Agree that it’s time to ask for help. When you do, let your senior know what the issue is. Tell them the things you have checked and processes you’ve gone through. That will help them narrow down where to go from there.

like

Check your M2, make sure the TOTAL contribution ties to the total of the special allocation that you’re using. Even a dollar off can cause a problem in the tax software

like

The way I operate with things like this is guess at for about 30-1 hour then shoot up the chain with what I tried to fix it and mention in the email "in effort to be budget conscious" I only spent "x" amount of time looking into this. Let me know if you want me to look further"

like

I agree, ask your senior. Times like this are easy to sink a lot of time into something where fresh eyes can give new perspective. Or if something is really wrong with the info they can escalate.

Reach out to your reviewer immediately and let them know the issue and ask them if they have time to discuss or if they want to review. Some reviewers need to dig into it on their own but personally I'd rather walk through any potential open item ahead of time so that when I review it I can sign off and don't need to send it back to you to finish, then review it again later.

Has anyone else gone back to relying more on public transportation with the surging Uber / Lyft prices. Trips to and from ohare are costing me about as much as the plane tickets themselves, and even simple things like meeting a friend for dinner in another neighborhood ends up costing around $80 in transportation costs. I haven’t taken buses and trains much since I’ve graduated but now it just feels like I’m throwing money out the window by not making the switch back.

Is there any difference in salary between Deloitte and KPMG? Just curious. Thinking to move to KPMG

KPMG reached out to me earlier this week and I’m interviewing for a tax position tomorrow morning. JD working on CPA. Working for a regional firm right now making $79k. I like it, but the benefits aren’t great.

Would anyone working in tax at KPMG recommend making the switch? What do your hours look like? Are you satisfied with the benefits?

I just found out that my CPA failed to file my returns and submit payment on time even though they confirmed on the 18th that it was going to be filed that day. I do corporate taxes and have extremely limited experience in personal taxes. What should I be concerned about here other than the penalty and late fees for their negligence?

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!
