M1 not helpful. OP your feelings are valid. Your stress is real. If you are real with yourself and no longer can see yourself potentially being happy in consulting you should make the jump, unless pressing factors keep you here
It could be worse you could be on a 9 month military deployment in Afghanistan looking out for IEDs or snipers...now that is stress
OP - knowing what you don't want is as valuable as knowing what you want, maybe even more so.
Now that you have tried consulting, and isolated for factors such as projects, teams, firms.. you know it is the job in itself that is causing you stress and is detrimental to your mental health (That much pressure is no good..)
You now have solid years of experience under your belt and are ready to call it quits.
So what? That's amazing! That means you'll be ready for the next chapter of your life in no time (nothing to regret as you've tried it all) :)
When you are mentally ready to move on, you'll feel relieved and later grateful for the experience.
You know what they say: 1 year in consulting = 3 in industry!
Good luck, take the time to reflect on what you're looking for in life and take care of yourself!
Way to be a gatekeeper M1
I feel ya. I was so convinced that consulting was what I wanted to do for my entire career, but the travel and constantly being stressed just doesn't seem worth it. Do you have any interviews coming up?
OP, keep in mind that sometimes we think a change in company, location, partners or something like that will improve our situation. But you gotta so 360 review and figure out if there is something you yourself can change.
I have been in this work line just for 3 years and I see many of my peers basically self inflicting pain and misery. You have to stand up to people and fiercely manage your work life balance.
Much like M1, I used to get shot at in my previous life. That gave me perspective, if we fuck up, no one dies. So I never take anything home.
After my work day is over, I dont think about work unless is for something fun or interesting. You need to do the same. Or else, even out of consulting you will be miserable as well.
Yeah wasn’t trying to make your stress invalid just putting things in perspective. I’ve learned not to give a fuck about everything that comes at me. Because at the end of the day we own stress and our emotions and it’s our choice to control it or let it overwhelm us. Whether you get it done today or tomorrow there’s still more work. So take it in stride, it could be worse, and you own your world...nobody else owns your life but you
Accenture - great post. What companies in industry would you recommend?
OP - chances are you have a ton of skills those in industry do not have. And have traveled and hopefully built some savings. Have you considered taking an LOA for some time off? Maybe use the experience to find another job (while you’re still employed?)
Exit consulting.... not worth the toll it is taking on you and your health
