I can’t tell if I’m slowly being rolled off my engagement or not. I’m being put on a lot of other engagements at the moment. I like the engagement that I’m on. How can I figure this out without coming across as paranoid? Nobody has told me I’m doing a bad job or anything like that.

Is there anyone you trust who is at least one level above you who you can ask about your performance? That’s where I’d start. It’s definitely better to get out in front of these things so there are no surprises at review.

The people who are above me, manager and senior, have both told me that I’ve been doing a great job. I can’t really think of anyone outside of that though.

It's normal as a staff. Probably your main client doesn't have things to keep you busy at the moment. Also, it's a good thing to have exposure to different engagements early on.

This engagement might not have the budget or they are trying to penny pinch. Given you are new they might be trying to get you billable else where rather than blow their budget/ only your manager and senior have to eat hours.

What level are you? I commonly see engagements with more staff than seniors and more seniors than managers. If there’s no turnover on the team, people nearing promotion are transitioned to engagements with anticipated needs at the next level.

Dont dance around the issue. Just approach your manager and tell them that you like your current team and client and would like to continue on the team bit are happy to help out other teams if there is a need. And ask them how they see your future on the team. That way you'll know one way or another. Sometimes we have to give up staff (for limited time or for good) because there are more pressing needs on other engagements. Might be temporary or maybe your team has no option

Sounds like you’re still on your main engagement, doing work as it comes in, and receiving good feedback, but also getting staffed on additional engagements? That’s pretty normal and not a way of pushing you out. If anything means you’re doing good and they want you to do more. If anything I’d start pushing back so you don’t get scheduled for too much/overwhelmed/burnt out. Doesn’t sound like a scenario where you need to be paranoid.

This almost seems like a too-easy fix, but check your schedule and/or ask if you’ll be on the team for next year’s busy season. Personally, I think it’s normal to rotate people off during the summer, for a lot of reasons - budget, to let the person get some new experience, just to give you a break from the same thing. But your team probably knows at this point if you’re on for next year. Booking anyone isn’t just a free-for-all - everyone has a schedule and to book someone who is already scheduled on one job, you’d need to make a case and discuss that with the current team. Long story short - your schedule should tell you the answer, whether it’s been updated in the system already or is just provisional in Excel on the manager’s desktop.

I’m not sure if you’re in audit, but if you are, just type Retain into the url box, and then go to my schedule and scroll through. I feel like if your practice has long-term engagements (tax or audit), as opposed to quick project-type engagements, it’s not unusual at all to ask! I always discuss my schedule with my teams or mentors in terms of “what I’ll be doing next busy season”

I was laid off from a resource management role, working with employees approaching or on the bench, working with managers to staff projects, and support functions like report creation, scheduling, etc. Roles like this are few and many large consulting firms have frozen internal hiring. Do you think it would be beneficial to get a SHRM cert? Would that help get a "talent related" HR role? Worth the money? I have a background in recruitment as well.
