Your creative leads sound like losers. Use your spare time to write a novel, watch movies, see more of the world and be with the people you love...not make advertising. Please tell them I said that.
You don’t want to be an advertising “hobbyist”? I get it. It’s kind of nuts, when you think about it.
Can you think of any other so called “creative” industry that demands the creative part of it must be done in parallel to the actual work that makes money?
Imagine a movie studio churning out garbage super hero tentpole trash, but wants its producers to finance the tastemaking films on their own.
I’ll proactively work on a client brief I’m not on. But, generally speaking, I don’t think about proactive ideas. If I have a good idea while I’m out living my life, I’ll write it down and wait for the right opportunity to share it.
That might be when my bosses ask for proactive project thinking. Or, on a brief that might be perfect for it. It all depends. But, rarely do I enjoy actively wasting time on fake briefs the client didn’t ask for.
