People massively exaggerate the amount of rain in London...
Part of the reason for the hosepipe ban is the rainfall here is actually v low. Lower than Madrid or Paris for example
Using an umbrella in london is unreal. Not because it doesnt really rain much in inches but because the wind is crazy. I’d rather not open an umbrella than deal with an inside out one.
In a nutshell… https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=F30oGnipOYo „Boris Johnson Umbrella“
No real umbrella etiquette outside - just try not to poke someone in the eye with it whilst you're wandering about with it open.
In the wetter months and depending on the temperature, people could wear showerproof / waterproof jackets, whether that be macs, rain jackets or heavier coats etc.
It's normally more like light drizzle for a very long time, rather than a shower. For that it's better to just wear a coat - I don't really see people wearing like, bright yellow raincoats but just any kind of jacket really, or wool coat in winter. It will save the bother of getting out the umbrella for the on-and-off drizzle.
It's not really an etiquette point like "never stand on the left on the tube escalator, and never carry an umbrella in the street!" - you can if you want to, it's just often the less practical option!
I've lived in London 38yrs. Unless you're walking long distances you can get by having a small umbrella in your bag. Even though people wear rain coats, it's a bother having a dripping wet raincoat as you walk into your office. I only ever use my umbrella to get from my car to somewhere or between train station/home/office. When you walk on a crowded street you may have to raise or lower your umbrella to adjust to other pedestrians
