If you’re looking for something to educate on anti-racism, I bought my niece the seasame street book “We’re different, we’re the same”. Pretty subtle but introduces different races

like

I will have a look at it!

You could check out resources on the Conscious Kid website or instagram. Given your family dynamic, I'd recommend finding books that are not explicitly anti-racist etc but that feature diverse characters and stories. One example is a book called "Last Stop on Market Street" which subtly touches on class issues. Also I'd gift the family babysitting coupons and spend some 1:1 time with the nephew to directly start to talk about these topics ;)

Yes! Love it. Thank you

He is 3 years old, may be too soon to find something on inclusion. A book would have to be read to him...by your sexist family :/ but buy him a doll, boys love baby dolls!

Thanks, all. It’s been a grieving journey, having always wanted a loving family, but I’m working to build a family made up of friends. If you love your (blood) family, hold them tight and be thankful for them over the holidays for those of us who aren’t as lucky 😊

Also look into the company “puzzle huddle”. They have cute puzzles that show more representation in professional roles.

I agree very much with the recommendation of spending more time with him if you that's possible. Books are great but also controlled by adults. Expose him to diverse environments early on in person. Even kids movies are more diverse now, and easy to talk about the morality of some of them.

like

As he gets older, auntie will definitely be taking him on adventures to places that are amazing but equally demonstrate the privileges that we live with and enable us to do more charitable work to feel that ;)

He’s only 3, look into kids’ movies that showcase different cultures/issues of inclusivity. When I was that little I loved movies/TV shows about different parts of the world and people who looked different (ie not white and upper class American) than most of the people I interacted with regularly. It’s good very very initial exposure and when he’s older you can explore more deliberate options.

Also- buying a “cute kids movie” seems more innocent/less agenda pushing than buying a book explicitly about race or something. Just considering the family dynamic here

We spout gender equality, but often ask women to do things men don't get asked to do. From organizing lunches/events at work (pre-Rona), to babysitting our siblings because we are girls with motherly insticts. It is generally expected that women do certain things that are "for the good of the community" which is just unpaid work for no praise. Let's change this. Let's start the change at home and it will translate elsewhere If you won't ask your son to do it, don't ask your daughter to do it.

After the whole diversity and inclusion push from my firm, I decided to try to create a Jewish group especially given all the anti semitism in the world. I sent an email to HR in beginning of august. Inclusion question. I am not sure what gender pronouns my barber prefers. This person appears to be a male (full beard, deep voice, etc.). I’ve noticed that the Google reviews reference this person as a female and when I called the shop to ask for my barber - the person who picked up also used a female pronoun. Barber has never corrected me when I refer to them as a man… I want to be inclusive and respect their identity. How can do this respectfully?
