...state income tax. The company also has a satellite office in WA. Can I ask them to hire me through the local office so my source of income remains WA? In the short-term, we are not planning to sell our primary home and my wife and kids would continue to be based here. I’ll be commuting between the two locations regularly.
Is anyone else in a similar situation? What can you reasonably negotiate with the new employer? What would you do personally to minimize CA tax liability? Our other sources of cashflow are wife’s job, rental income, and investment income. I understand that we’d need to pay CA taxes on some or all of these too.
How does one do that if the employer is CA-based? Since my primary income will be from a CA source, would it be possible to avoid paying taxes on other sources of income by not establishing residence?
