Honestly I do the other side of employment discrimination and I thought it was going to be the absolute worst, i sold my soul, but honestly it wasn’t. I like it. I know it seems terrible but I get to tell employers when they are discriminating (and thereby need to settle asap) or otherwise tell them it’s a bogus case (which honestly, sometimes it is) and we can fight it and get it thrown out. It feels like I have the ability as a queer WOC to help employers see when they are discriminating, so why not contribute?
Thank you for being willing to tell your clients when they are discriminating. Hopefully, your clients do more than write a settlement check, i.e., change their discriminatory culture and/or practices and/or deal specifically with the bad apple(s).
I did employment discrimination work and was only truly fulfilled when I did it for a reputable civil rights nonprofit; otherwise, it was fine. I did not feel like I was doing God’s work at the other places, but everyone deserves the right to representation.
As an attorney who is currently fighting against a former employer on the basis of discrimination and am sickened by the lack of integrity on behalf of the other party and their counsel, I encourage you to work for an organization where you can make a difference. If that difference is counseling clients to be honest and/or accountable and not to discriminate, then make your mark in defense work. However, if you know your client is wrong and your job is to simply represent them essentially allowing them to perpetuate their discrimination and negatively impact the lives of people who already have multiple strikes against them— Don’t do it.
