That means you have taken more than you have accrued so far

Literally though for the people that think they always need to have a wise ass comment. I’m sure OP understands this concept but rather what it means long term. Can they still take off work for a vacation? Etc. not necessarily what does a negative PTO balance mean. Jeez

like

totally misinterpreted OP’s question then as did everyone else… and you still didn’t answer their question… to answer this interpretation of OP’s question, I used to enjoy going negative (if your firm allows it, I think most of them do) especially because we need special approval to take PTO for like 1/3 of the year. Once I knew I wanted to leave tho I monitored my PTO balance to make sure I didn’t leave negative. I think having a low balance is healthy and I encourage it

If you quit now, you owe them money.

Really? You’re an accountant and you don’t know what that means? My non-college-degree, non-accountant wife knows what that means. Boy

Everyone asks this question one time. I remember a manager asking if it was semi-monthly or biweekly pay and I was like “same” and he was a jerk about it when clearly I just didn’t learn that lesson yet. I mean until you go through pregnancy it is not engraved that 4 weeks do in fact not mean a month.

You can come to EY and have unlimited PTO.

I had to pay back my unlimited PTO after I left the firm

You can be negative if you’ve charged more vacation hours than you had built up. I know someone who started at the firm in the negative because they went to training and then had their honeymoon.

Means you debited more than what you were credited.

Yes they can take that out of your pay when/if you leave.

I left the firm with a negative vacation and had to pay them for it. Was really struggling financially though at the time (hence me leaving for a new job in the first place) so they let me work out a payment plan, basically just to make sure it was all paid back within the same year.

Apparently I wasn’t in one of those states because they came after me 😄

Really? You honestly don't know what that means?

Has anyone left with a negative balance and had to pay their firm cash?

like

Personally, no, but a long tenured IT guy I know that worked for the firm 30+ years had a negative PTO balance when he retired and he said he wouldn’t have done it any other way. Rather owe the firm money because you can’t get your time back, but the firm will happily take it from you every year that you don’t use it.

Unless you have a negative PTO balance AND all your vacation photos include your work laptop. /s

No worries - happened to me. I eventually accrued enough hours to go back to positive. However, if you quit then you’ll owe.

Does anyone have any suggestions about places where you can stay without the hassle/expectation to be tipping everyone all the time?

I hate having to give tips for everything when I'm on vacation. I don't want to be carrying cash around. In fact, I don't even want to be thinking about it. I just want to relax!

To be clear, this isn't about the money. It's about the hassle. I'd just rather pay an upfront gratuity fee that covers all of tips for the entire stay.

How do you make sure you find an industry job that comes with the raise you want (within reason) without having to work more than 45 hours a week? One of my clients emails me at 10pm somewhat regularly. Another never leaves/logs off before 9pm for 5 weeks between quarter end and release of the 10-Q. I’d rather stay at B4 with our 6 weeks of time off per year (PTO + summer and winter breaks) rather than go to an industry job with regular long hours and half the PTO. Thoughts?

i am getting employed by a big firm in entertainment in a couple weeks. the only problem is that I am on my OPT Stem and the company is not e-verified, so they are hiring me through a 3rd party company. this 3rd party company doesn’t have any PTO and much benefits. i will literally not get paid for holidays either. the salary is pretty good -they matched my other offers with a sign-on bonus- so i’m still thinking of saying okay to all this until i get my new EAD for greencard. am i silly?
