I currently have an 1800 billable hour requirement at my firm. On paper this means I'm billing 7.5 hour days/150 hour months. I'm looking at firm's that have an 1850-1950 hour requirements - what impact on my work/like balance will those extra 150 have?

Make sure you factor in non-billable work too. The expectation really varies from firm to firm.

I went from a firm with a 2000 hour requirement where I regularly met that number but didn’t exceed it often even in a busy year, to a firm with a 2000 hour requirement where I regularly exceed it (currently on track for 2650 this year). Which is to say hours requirements don’t tell you much at all. It’s going to come down to what the unspoken expectations are.

like

how many hours are you working to get those 7.5?

Also make sure that you will not have nonbillable expectations weighing you down. I struggled to bill 1800 at a firm where I was forced to sit on committees, attend nonbillable internal meetings, and attend functions for the partners' pet projects. Moved to a firm without that nonsense and now easily bill 1950-2000.

SOS. How do I know if I’m being paid fairly? I feel as though I’ve grown out out the “coordinator” role, but my company insists that I “prove myself” and add more responsibilities to my plate to show I am capable before I am promoted. But I feel like I already am doing more than a coordinator title, and my job title is just wrong. Is that fair?

How do you handle handoff/transition before going on maternity leave? I will be going on maternity leave in 3 months and need to put together a transition plan so that someone can take care of my work while I am out. I want to make sure nothing falls through the crack but at the same time don’t want to train someone to do 100% of my job - that would make my role redundant if someone can just take over right? Plus the company is going through restructuring now too. How would you handle this?

I was working with a partner on drafting a brief, who hated the way I wrote it, made me drastically change everything, increase the word count and spill my blood, sweat, and tears for months into editing it. Just before filing a different partner took a hand at cutting it down because it was too long - and he edited the brief back to the way I wrote it originally 🤦🏽‍♀️ Sometimes this job is an absolute joke.

M&A Hours Check. What’s your year end target looking like? Think about 80 percent of the firm’s group is not going to hit hours. Not sure how sustainable this is. Definitely have great leadership that are swallowing the brunt of it, but I’m curious if any survivors of 08 ever had a really bad hours year and still survived. Obviously M&A takes the brunt during these times, but are firms thinking that they want to be poised for when things return back to normal or are they about to let the ball go

For those of you in the field, what would you tell someone in my position? Would you recommend law school? Would you do it again? Would you discourage it?
