I currently have an autoimmune disease , receive two immunosuppressive drugs , had my vaccine and still have Covid pretty bad . I am thinking of taking a. Leave of absence because I can’t keep getting sick like this . Has anyone else been in similar shoes ?

I also have an autoimmune condition (prefer that word versus disease). I take several medications as well. However I have yet, knock on wood, to get covid. As both my children have had it. I have not gotten the vaccine. I am not one to wear masks either. I think you need to do what is right for you. I personally believe that we shouldn’t shelter ourselves because that only weakens our immune systems. This is all my opinion of course. But do what you think is right for you and you alone.

I agree with avoiding the anti social media because both sides of any aisle; Christian, political, gender, professional, race or just as a human being, can be adamant about their perception of life as if it is always better than the other side. The media is always in a frenzy about one thing or another and when we watch it we begin to agree with and act like them. No thanks. I seek peace. And promote it. I can believe what I want but leave everyone else alone. I accept attitude adjustments when out of place. If it is not helpful to me then why burden myself with more burdens than what may come to my life. And try not to burden others. They have plenty of their own. For each of us, blessings never outweigh our problems. But we can find blessings even in the small things.

NYMS 3 … I also have 2 autoimmune conditions… one neurological and one systematic. Both of my drs recommended the vaccines. One was worried I would not be able to make antibodies, so I had to get a pre & post test! Thankfully I made them. The vaccines does not compromise your immune system. It helps it to identify an invader to fight it off. PES 1, you are correct … people need to leave the politics out and follow science. I can understand everyone’s frustration with this whole darn thing! And NYMS 3 there are plenty of things that you can do do help your immune system. (I have been living with one of these for 30 years) is eat a healthy diet, not too many refined carbs, exercise, and get proper rest. (Clean eating) is very helpful. I sound like an advertisement🤣😂 But I have found you have to make a point, to do what’s best for you… vitamin D, vitamin C, probiotics are all good for your immune system, but you can also get these through your diet. I’m sorry that you were advised not to get the shot , because you will have to be extra careful to protect from Covid. If you have time, you look up foods for … that word they use… ‘inflammation’ that help the type of inflammation that we have because of our messed up immune systems!! but be vigilant in protecting yourself too!

My cousin also has an autoimmune disease and the vaccine has had no affect for her either. Your cases are rare. She has the opportunity to work completely remote. I know teaching remotely is not ideal, but perhaps your district is offering that option to some students and you could continue working from home or a private office. Please take care of yourself, my prayers are with you.

NYMS 3 Why and on earth would you say something like that? It isn’t helpful, neither is it true. I am fully vaccinated and getting my booster tomorrow. I have no intention of dying any day soon. Not only that, more ppl recover from Covid then die. I am certainly not disagreeing that this is very scary, but unfortunately, and as you may have read on here, many do not want to get vaccinated. I really don’t follow their logic for not getting vaccinated. On the other hand I don’t think we are ALL going die. Statements like these can scare people even more than they already are. Hang in there… the works and it’s inhabitants of the world, have been through amazing things in the life of the earth. Before modern science people died from many things that are now curable. The discovery of penicillin is a biggie… people died of strep throat. I cannot tell you how many times in my life that I’ve had that. I know it’s hard and challenging, but we made it this far, and our scientist know much more about this virus then they did when the pandemic started. Take a deep breath.,. and try to destress. Go for a walk , run up and down the stairs 5 times, or jog in place for a minute… it may help your fears🌈

I am in a similar boat. Immunocompromised, autoimmune disorder on top of that, Interstitial lung disease from a collapsed lung, and a few more things to add into the mix. There is no easy answer. Every winter I have to look at the flu the same way most people look at Covid, and I have to look at Covid the way most people would look at lava in their front lawn. I am returning but I am seriously having to wonder how many years I can continue on because each year my risk goes up and now the precautions are shrinking. Ultimately that is something that only I can decide and sounds like you have a similar situation. You can always directly message me if you want. I know it isn't an easy choice.

To all my fellow educators... Take care of your health first. No matter where you are on the way to retirement, no matter how hard it might be to leave, you can't serve the future students if you're , at the best, incapacitated from this pandemic. You can't take care of others if you're not taking care of you! Take a break, stay safe, and stay healthy! ❤️❤️

1st - Talk to your doctor to see what they think. 2nd - Move out of Florida cause your governor does not care about you.

It’s nothing to do with the fact that you have a different view, it’s because the view directly harms other people. I don’t respect view points that are racist either.

I took a leave of absence because I could not handle being online for 7 hours and using the computer hours after school ended. Took me a while to realize my mental health is more important for my family and myself. Sad part was easily being replaced🙄.

To Florida Elementary School… I am so sorry and will pray for you! I also have autoimmune disorders (Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, asthma, and a list of other chronic conditions). Our superintendent sent 2 parent letters out stating that masks would be optional, before the inevitable mask mandate cam down from our governor. He also ENCOURAGED us to complain about the mandate to our elected officials….. then when forced to, backtracked and threatened discipline for anyone who defied the mandate!!! It was unbelievable. We had teachers saying they would refuse to wear them. So, to answer your question, YES, YOU BET YOUR *** I am taking medical leave. My entire family is vaccinated, but if this nonsense continues and creates chaos in the learning environment, I will pull my kids out of the district as well. Actually, I would anyway if they weren’t so opposed to it. They are highly social and act responsibly, but they also are smart enough to learn virtually. I wish you the best and pray for your health. I’m not sure about FL, but I believe anyone who pays into TRS could be eligible for temporary disability through them. That is what I have chosen for now, and I highly recommend you look into it!!

IMS1- I too am starting my year with a leave. Not risking it and MI cases, while increasing at a scary rate, are not nearly as bad as the south. Our time is coming. States with no mandates, MI included, will see catastrophic effects (as extremely recent history shows us…look at FL and TX to name a few) This virus is extremely effective in finding vulnerability or small cracks in the foundation. Boy oh boy does our foundation have cracks- Vulnerability is covid’s playground!

I have 4 immunosuppressive conditions, one of which I take a B cell inhibitor infusion once a month. I have learned to listen to my body. I also drink a lot of water to keep my core temperature down. Yes, it means bathroom breaks, but I also work with an amazing team of teachers that understand I need scheduled restroom breaks.

like

Yes ! I’m on two immunosuppressive drugs as well and was in step down ICU for eight days at the end of last year with covid. I’m terrified of getting sick again. Also thinking of taking a leave .

I would definitely take a leave. I had COVID July 2020 and was so unbelievably sick but with a German nurse as a mom taking a leave was completely discouraged and even scoffed at. I’m still having grave affects of long hauler symptoms and thanks to COVID I now meet all the markers for fibromyalgia. I am not sure how I made it through teaching last year. I was a walking zombie and robot and so so sick sleeping on my lunch break and then right after school before getting back up to work more. It’s been awful but I am so much better now than I was. I also had to have an emergency hysterectomy as they were concerned about stage 2 or 3 cancer. I’m on the mend but far from where I want to be. Please be safe. I’m vaccinated but hace been masked since February 2020 and spaced and unbelievably mindful.

like

ORD1- I too have a mother who is from Germany. I totally get what you’re saying. You are so right! Errr With that said, I hope you rethink your decision about a leave. We (me and my 5 sibs) eventually learned that we had to let out mom know what we were doing (move out of state, get divorced, etc) and that it was not up for debate. The ice clears eventually, sooner than you might think. Good luck! My thoughts are with you.

Yep & then after repeatedly getting sick I broke my leg. I took FMLA for part of it, but admin targeted me & even made me go home , then talked to me about my excessive absences, since I was new in the district did not renew my contract, so I resigned- currently jobless.

NMES 1 Me too. I have 2 autoimmune, one neurological, and one systematic one. I have thought of retiring this year, not just because of Covid… but teaching is difficult with my fatigue level! My hub wants me to stay for the last 3years so I can get my full benefit. I guess I’m going to try but if the littles start getting it… I may retire mid year!!

God bless you teachers who have spent your life in this profession to retire and it is in jeopardy as well our lives. My proverbial hat is off to you.

FES- take a leave of absence…hands down! I too have autoimmune and cancer. I go back the end of august and your experience is my biggest fear. It takes our body so much longer to heal and get back to ‘our’ normal. Please be mindful of this and take off. This u is a not the time to mess around. My thoughts are with you. Feel better soon! 💕

Read about the spike proteins. The vaccines compromise your immune system, and you already have a compromised immune system. I have a compromised immune system due to an autoimmune disease and was told not to get the shot. What do you do to build your immune system? 🙏
