I currently WFH. However I expect that we will return to the office by summer or fall. I live 1.5 miles away from work, but I don’t have a car. I want to avoid buying a car if possible. What are the best ways to get to work. I live in the city so biking is a little too dangerous for me. Any ideas?

1.5 miles? I used to walk 2 miles just to get to a train station in NYC.

Is public transit available? That’s only a 30 minute walk, and depending on how often you have to go in it may be cheaper to even just Uber sometimes and walk sometimes as opposed to buying a car

Electric scooter?

Try an electric longboard. Cheaper and you can put it under your desk.

I walk a little over 1 mile. I walk in allbirds and then switch shoes when I get to work. I carry deodorant with me, which I reapply when I get to the office. I make sure it’s a casual walk, not a speed walk. This works for the vast majority of the year. When it’s at the hottest point in summer, I might change my shirt or just leave 30 min earlier before it’s so hot.

Haha. Any tips for walking? I don’t want to come to work sweaty etc.

(Before WFH era) my morning and evening walks had become the best moments of my day, waking me up in the morning, and letting go the stress of the day before arriving home at night. During summer I like to bring a set of clothes to change at work but the rest of the year it’s not necessary, even during winter. Plus if I don’t hit the gyms as much as I would like to on busy weeks, I’m always satisfied that I have walked at least 15 miles over the week. You get used to it and you’ll feel grumpy if you eventually miss your daily walk!

I have biked in a city most days for the past 15 years. Helmet, lights, reflective gear, obey traffic laws, ride at your own pace, ignore fast cyclist, watch for car doors. Also, scooters/electric bikes are great alternatives.

Recommendation is map our 3-4 options and consider the elements. Walking might be okay for most of the year, but you'll have to be really committed to do it during a heat wave, torrential downpour, or snowy day.

I would really reconsider biking. It's an easy, what, <10 min ride?

Check out bus routes.

Always have Uber and Lyft installed as backup.

Or you could get creative with a motorized scooter or something (just make sure there aren't any local restrictions for use on sidewalks for example)

What city? In the US, quite a few cities are bike friendly and have designated biking lanes.

I agree with the other reply, I'd walk as well. Unless you're in direct sunlight in areas where it gets really hot, you wouldn't sweat any more walking than biking.

Buckhead in Atlanta, GA

Nowhere in Atlanta is really pedestrian friendly. Maybe a few blocks in Midtown. Also with the recent crime uptick in buckhead I would NOT recommend walking there.

Uber or lift

CTA is very efficient and reliable. Cheap and safe. A bus has to go to your destination plus fewer people are riding now so they’re able to socially distance

For those of you who are how do you put this on your resume or linkedin. Will it look suspicious or frowned upon that you’re doing two jobs at the same time? Any way this can be justified or put in a positive light?
