I currently withhold an additional $400 per paycheck for federal taxes, and this past year more or less broke even with a few hundred dollar tax refund. Wondering if I should continue witholding that amount or if that money would be better leveraged some other way, like a short term investment.

You don’t want to get a big refund but you may not want to owe a lot either. I always try to withhold to break even or owe a small amount

like

Last year I owed 3.5k. This year I owed 5k. I wait to pay as long as possible. That later payment adds up quite a bit over time on interest earned.

My take is that refunds are a wasted opportunity to invest.

I withhold the minimum required to avoid penalties. I update projections each quarter of how much I need to pay the following 4/15 and am prepared to owe whatever amount through saving my paycheck in February/March before the payment date.

Max out my Roth IRA contributions for the previous tax year (sitting at like $4k out of $6k so far) with my stimulus check, or split it up between speculative plays I think have a ton of potential? (PLTR, CCIV, Bitcoin, and Ethereum)

Roth IRA is 100% allocated to the Vanguard Windsor fund btw. I’m 23 and think risky plays while your young are the only way you ever truly make it, but recognize the benefits of maxing Roth IRA YOY. Help!

Hot take. Cut all welfare programs. Take the budget from the programs and give them as monthly cash transfers for All US citizens (with minor tweaks depending on number of dependents). Benefit paid out would be higher than the existing programs as we cut administrative costs and don't have to spend anything on figuring out who qualifies. If it bothers you that rich people would get this, then raise income tax on the highest bracket by 1%.

Looking for a friendly discussion here... don’t know if there is a straight forward answer, but why are we allowed to put more in a 401k vs an IRA? They are essentially the same thing (correct me if I’m oversimplifying) with the main difference being 401ks are provided by employers. Do you feel like this could be a contributor to the wealth gap? 401ks are more of the norm at white collar jobs and a lot of companies don’t offer one. Is it fair? Talk to me.

Hi all,

I posted recently about selling my 2018 camry xse. It's fully loaded (minus v6 engine) and in great condition, low mileage for its year (18.5k). They offered $29.4k and a new one (although out of stock) goes for something like $34k-$35k.

Any tips on negotiating? I'm not hurting to sell the car so I don't mind walking, but it's more convenient to sell it to a dealer than wait for a private sale (heard they can take awhile). KBB says trade-in of 27k-29k, private sale of 29k-31k.

I’m using TurboTax and hoping someone can clarify if what I am doing is correct. I contributed to Roth IRA, but MAGI is above limit so I recharacterized in 2022. For 2021 tax return, I selected Traditional IRA > No to repayment of distribution > No to excess IRA contributions > No to non deductible contributions to IRA…after saying No to all of the questions, it states that I have a penalty. I thought I didn’t have to pay a penalty if I recharacterized? Any help appreciated!
