Learning about public health and the healthcare system, as well as health/EHR data. Too many data scientists think they’re experts because they can slap a model on any problem, but fail to recognize that real subject matter expertise is important to a) make sure the analyses are accurate and b) be able to interpret them in a way that’s clinically relevant
2nd this, although I don’t think it’s a barrier to entry as long as you’re aware/willing to learn the industry.
If you have the skill to look at each problem independently and communicate with stakeholders and tweak models as such, you can learn and succeed in any industry. If you believe your models/methods are good enough to fit any problem, you won’t succeed in any industry without a strong team around you who is able to add business context to analytics problems.
Basically you need soft skills just as much as technical skills, anywhere but esp. in healthcare I’ve found
Knowledge of the healthcare system and data privacy rules - this is what trips most people up.
R Studio? That's the IDE. Do you mean R???
Thank you for the clarification. I know it’s the IDE, but I was just listing things out and I figured it would get the same point across with the specific IDE exposure that I have.
Solve for = Interoperability
If your client gives you data in HL7 format, can you do an analysis using your Tableau? If you can find your way to do that, then you are on your way. Otherwise, you’ll have a rough day.
