I did a photo shoot for my firm’s diversity campaign and they made me look browner than I am to make a point :/ Not sure what to do

That is fucked up. I’m sorry that happened and I’m sorry people are challenging you on whether that is an issue or not

Truly sad the responses to this post. Op you should let someone know at least. They may not change it but at least you will know you tried to remediate.

The only thing I can think of - if you are involved in the diversity program, maybe you could speak to one of those leaders about feeling uncomfortable that the photo was deliberately modified in a way you feel is meant to score points deceptively (or whatever you feel - not putting words in your mouth). At least they can learn from it, even if you don’t feel like taking a ‘harder’ stance - eg getting the photo fixed or removed, which would be more difficult and may cause too much anxiety to be worthwhile

like

Sure it isn’t an issue with lighting, like when it was taken, or even the brightness on the computer you are looking at it on?

like

@ Baker Tilly 1 I agree with you. truly sad. And most people do not understand the reason behind this post. I think you should say something OP. Find someone in the diversity program or leadership in general and voice out your feelings. If you are not happy about it, don’t be silent about it.. do not let them misrepresent you to the world if they believe you are not “diverse enough” for the campaign.

like

I would first make sure it’s not the lighting in the picture (or something else like display brightness if you’re viewing the picture electronically). If it’s not due to the above, I would absolutely file a complaint with HR. Keep electronic copies on your personal devices (i.e., not on your firm laptop) of all your communications with HR, the diversity campaign pictures, etc. in case anyone takes retaliatory action against you for reporting

like

The fact that so many people (via the responses in this thread) are so quick to discount OP’s concerns is maddening. What if he/she had posted about sexual misconduct I.e. - the #metoo campaign? Would you still be so quick to discount his/her experience too? Reasons like these are why people are so nervous to speak up in the first place, and they should be free to speak on this anonymous platform of all places without fear of judgement.

I'm one of few black accountants I know. What is your race? If you are white and you appear tan... 1) nothing wrong with being tan 2) if they put a filter on it. The company you work for is a joke

I mean, I’ve done a fair bit of photo editing. You can lose sight of what the original looks like after a lot of edits to color balance etc. it was probably hired out by a photographer. I just wouldn’t go in and accuse them of it, certainly bring it up. Obviously if it was intentional then that’s wrong.

Was the photo shoot outdoors?

I mean I wouldn’t go in and accuse them of “making a point”. You don’t actually know what happened.

Just speak up and request clarity. All the diversity things firms do it’s just for optics typically.Few firms actually have good intentions for things related to diversity.

like

Of course you should speak up. Go way above their heads. Someone should get fired for this. Someone thought this was a good idea. It is a horrible idea......to portrait someone that they are not. Make a stand. Or just live with it. Up to you. Not sure what firm you are with. I’m at EY and I’d be my office managing partners office in a heartbeat and let them take it from there.

Was it to make you darker or everyone darker?

like

To those unhappy with why people here are being skeptical about the issue, it’s a healthy skepticism. If I don’t know the facts, why would I blindly believe a statement made on a forum/app? I’m a person of color, but I still won’t jump to the conclusion that my firm made me darker on purpose. Usually lighting and the environment where the picture was taken has to do with it, especially if the difference was not that drastic. If it was like that photo from the French art school, that’s blatant. Now if this picture was used for an article on diversity, and there is a visible difference in skin tone from RL to the picture, then I’ll believe it. It it was a headshot or some other professional picture used internally, then I highly doubt they’d made you darker on purpose. TL;DR we aren’t trying to downplay OPs concern, just using professional skepticism. I’ve had pictures where I turned out darker than normal, so I understand

like

I know it’s delayed response but it was more the makeup and then the lighting and the final published form made it worse. I know it because everyone I showed it too said the same thing. When it was actually happening (the makeup) I was shocked to see the final effect in the mirror and thought I’d sound vain if I said anything. When the final pictures were give for feedback, again I thought it was only me, and when I finally saw the published version I just can’t get over the fact that it’s all everyone is saying and what does it mean

helpful

Also, this picture was taken indoors. My makeup was done by “professional makeup artist”. I even gave the makeup artist my own foundation to use since the color match can be so difficult. I was though given the option to do my own makeup but since I’m not so good at makeup myself and I had been told that this picture would be published I wanted professional help. And yes, this was used in the firm’s diversity campaign and that’s what makes me question whether it’s just me or whether there’s factual different in color tone. I’m brown, not white. Don’t want to be too specific. I was skeptic of my own thoughts too but hearing it from so many people, I’ve now been legit wondering whether it was deliberate or the makeup artist’s mistake

Also funny how people just assumed I was a woman, even though that’s true
