I did an Audit internship and got an offer, but absolutely hated my internship experience. Should I reach out to other recruiters at other firms/cities?

It's extremely difficult to give interns meaningful work especially if they're super busy. You maybe confident in your abilities, but sometimes the low level work just isn't there. I spent most of audit internship scanning hard copy files because it had to be done. Going into my 4th year and doing way more. I wouldn't take the internship as much more than an opportunity to see if the firm is a good fit for you people and culture wise.

Wow, used the wrong there.... I'd drop a review note on myself. Damnit

Just apply for non-audit for full time? Say you did audit and realized it's not for you

Our interns just go play at Disneyland all summer long, do 2 days of work, go back to school, gets a job offer at some other form. I had one look for skipped numbers on a check register, which took a whole afternoon, don't think intern is coming back...

Try another firm. Idk why you would work 80 hours a week with no actual work.

My work included: obtain breakfast each morning and have it ready before my team arrived at 7:30, get Starbucks at 10, get lunch at 12, get Starbucks again at 2, get an afternoon snack at 4, get dinner at 6:30, go home at midnight or so. I was really shocked when I got my offer and it had my name on it because they called me "intern" the rest of the time. Sighs.

As someone at GT I'm sorry you had such a terrible experience. That's definitely not how I would treat my interns. I think it's also an American thing. I've worked in other countries and it's very different

like

I think I could have liked audit, but I didn't do a single thing. Everybody else was talking about tie outs, testing, etc and I had absolutely nothing to do. Worked 80 hours a week with maybe 8 minutes of work all week

Hmmm doesn't sound like you got a real experience.... Do you actually find accounting interesting? If not it might not be for you. Look at your resume and look toward consulting or advisory.... If your resume can't get their then find someone you know for advice. I have a lot of counsellees I talk with on this all the time. Big decision coming out of school but in general it is a small piece of your overall career when you put it all in perspective..... If you want a CPA you need a year regardless

I'd stay. I had a terrible internship and I've been in it for 5 years now. Work life balance is good if you position yourself well and the application works everywhere

Good to know. I had offers from multiple big 4 firms but took my offer thinking I'd have the opportunity to learn more and do more. Turns out, I began losing brain cells day by day. I'm not planning to do this long and really just need to work in public a few years to get some basis for research. I didn't know if it would be worth it to try and contact a few of the big 4 recruiters or not.

Yes

I'm sure our interns were just as miserable in tax. We just don't have much to give them during the summer.

OP thanks for sharing sounds like a horror story

I think you are just bad luck and have a senior who doesn't want to delicate. My interns do real work for me!!!

I really do find accounting interesting. I plan on eventually going into academia; however the original plan was to do public for a few years. After my experience, I'm planning to try and go ahead to get into a PhD program. My coach (partner) and I had a discussion about other options and she was very insistent upon me staying in audit. (Weird considering she saw me do absolutely nothing)

wow, I think I am too nice to my intern...

Did you do a winter internship? I don't think our office had a single winter intern sit for more than 3 days here and there between jobs. They may have just over recruited. If you liked what little exposure you had and you liked the office/people I would say give it a shot. If it still isn't going anywhere in a year the only difference is you have a year of public on your resume

some other firm*

I'm switching jobs and considering whether I want to roll over my 401(k). I have about $220k in my plan. Considering rolling it into an existing Fidelity IRA with a balance of about $50k. Since October of 2020, I've paid about $880 in "plan administrative fees" to my 401(k) provider as well as the fund expense ratios. It looks like Fidelity does not charge administrative fees on IRA accounts, so that seems to make it a no brainer, plus the investment options are much broader. What am I missing?
