Wow that’s bad did not saw that coming
Having been on the industry side of the recruiting experience now, here’s my perspective. People sometimes worry that when people only have Big 4 or really intense jobs before going to industry, that they won’t be happy here. It’s a catch-22 of sorts. You are looking for a better quality of life, different experiences, etc but people hiring you are assuming you will be bored or unhappy with the change of pace. It’s risky for us to bring you in without previous industry experience because if we hire you, you get bored and bail in 6 months, then we have to start all over again. So, we go a safer route we people who understand the differences already.
So next time you have to sell why you want to make the change.
Well, they still have to make a convincing case! 😉
This makes no sense if you interviewed. They reviewed your resume and should have screened you initially. When they give this excuse it’s just not true. It’s the easiest excuse

It happens. You can always go for another job and then two years late go for the dream job. Then you would have the mix of public and industry.
Yeah companies are weird about this. Ran into this excuse at a lot of places I applied coming out of public.
Nope it really isnt
What kind of position were you going for, OP? Seems odd that they’d value industry experience that much unless it’s a manager or above position?
I’ve heard from clients they like PA background but also should have private industry experience. Depends on your level but if you’re looking at a controller or assistant controller position I find industry experience is very important.
Sometimes it’s also in Big 4 you have not done a lot of the tactical stuff, like used systems, run reports, consolidations and they may just not want to put the time into training if they have another more plug and play person. Don’t be discouraged, this is one of the best labor markets we have ever had. What city are you looking in?
It’s harder for someone with no public to get a job
