^While that is true, for reasons beyond the scope of my post here, when we see Trump and Congress ram their 1950s agenda down America's throat, it's important to remember most of the country doesn't support this at all. I mean, that speech yesterday was the least statesmanlike, least diplomatic, least conciliatory speech you could imagine.
I think the point is that although he won per the rules, he was not voted in by the majority of the country. So where we say every vote counts, it did not because if every vote counted then he would not be president.
Means most of the country didn't want who's currently in office. I don't see what's difficult to understand...
Trump seems to get it. That's why he gets so uncomfortable about it.
There's a long list of why Trump shouldn't be our president, but this is not one of them.
The sentence starts with "I don't get it" coming from a "Trump Voter". Do we need to impart education or save our fingers the trouble? I rest my case.
It's mind blowing how few people realize we are not a direct democracy and rather a constitutional republic. The system worked just as designed - if you take away the popular vote margin from California, Trump wins. It's to balance the power of our semi-sovereign federation of states. They used to teach this in schools, but now they teach the little snowflakes about microaggressions and the righteousness of victimhood. It's sad. FWIW - I am not a Trump voter and have no interest in defending him.
Get off your high horse. Stop looking down on people. I voted for Bernie and then Clinton. I'm just accepting of the outcome and know we lost this one.
@D3 That's technically our system too. Each state gets votes based on census results each year. We just mess it up with the other rules like winner take all, minimum 3 votes per state etc.
Form of checks and balances? Also it really is becoming more clear that liberals are super inclusive and tolerant - as long as you agree with them, otherwise they try to assassinate your character and bully you to submission. Voted for Clinton and used to love CNN, but the propaganda is everywhere! I hate all media now. But just like Churchill said, don't read the papers and you're uninformed, read the papers and you're misinformed --- ugh 😑
That's the issue of whether or not we should have the electoral college. Some valid points on both sides of that argument, but those points should have been raised before by democrats and the ones protesting. Now is too late. Now it seems like Hillary lost and we just don't like the outcome.
Plus, when we talk about legitimacy, that's beyond legality or whether he's "officially" our prez. The concept also speaks to the degree to which the country supports his agenda and his political capital. For what that's worth...
Not to mention, voters are aware of the electoral college system. If the election was a popular vote, the tally results likely would have been different. For example, if one lives in a traditional blue state like CA or NY, there is less incentive to vote as a republican. Saying he lost the popular vote is accurate but irrelevant because that's not the metric that counts
I think it's sad that now welfare programs basically enslave lower socioeconomic populations, with no incentive built in for them to rise above their means. I sincerely believe democrats want to keep people poor to maintain a voting block
C1 I don't know what kind of misinformed rampage you're on right now, but you missed the portion of US History that covers the essential swap of Democrat and Republican ideologies over time. I have also heard from many Republican friends lately almost verbatim this line about "liberals being great until you disagree with them." Yes - when you disagree with someone, you try passionately to convince them otherwise. And unfortunately in this election cycle, a lot of the convincing that needs to be done is about having empathy for others, which is why it may feel so personal. Sorry not sorry.

Every vote doesn't count, nationally. They all count within their states. It's a Constitutional Federal Republic kids. Democracy is for conquered states and morons that live for the tyranny of the majority.
So if it was by population then urban centers and more populous cities would carry more weight than rural or less populated cities in the US. Using Virginia as an example: the reason a largely red state (by congressional district or county) can have a blue governor and senators is because urban areas such as Richmond and northern Virginia have been largely democrat. Thus in Virginia the majority wins, but at the expense of the the rest of the state, it marginalizes less populated areas. So basically if one wins NoVa, Norfolk, and Richmond - you've got the state --- and people everywhere else are not represented well.
The electoral college is a means to give fairness a cross the country in order to give weight to all regions, without have cities pitted against rural areas
The low voter turnout doesn't matter as much more as his 32% approval rating. GOP controls Congress and the white House, but for practical purposes they may as well be separate parties.
