I don’t have a degree but consulting experience at Big 4. I learned you can get a bachelor degree in wine tasting, do you think it would still be accepted as a regular bachelor degree for future jobs?

School reputation is more important than the actual major I’d avoid for profit or online schools and stick with a decent state school. Another consideration is what major / program will be more valuable for you in the long term beyond allowing you to check the college box.

like

Agreed school name matters a lot less for an experienced hire, but it’s still on your resume and yes people look at it and may judge you by it... Clients will see as well on bio slides, and many will look down on University of Phoenix or Devry. A state school looks like Harvard compared to a for profit degree mill.

In wine TASTING? You sure about that? Degrees in wine making/production and wine business aren’t uncommon. And you can find individual courses for wine tasting. But a degree in wine tasting seems suspect. But to your point, I think the need for a degree becomes less and less when you have the experience they’re looking for, and that experience at name brands like PwC and Deloitte is big.

like

I’ve taken wine tasting courses in college. Super fun. Doubt you’d find a degree for it though. If you don’t NEED a degree though, why spend the $60,000+ on it? Spend some money on some fun wine courses which are pretty cheap.

If you think you need to get a degree then get one closer to what it is you do. FWIW..I don’t have a degree and it’s only been an issue twice in my career.

This would be far more useful than my degree is. I definitely didn’t do college right.

How did you get these jobs?

I was self employed before where they didn’t rly care because I was cheaper. I worked 3 years as contracts and then got into PwC based on experience

If you only care about getting a degree to check a box, look into an online program. There are plenty of accredited online programs to get a bachelors in business (management, accounting, econ, etc.) for under $20k.

I have just completed my first of 12 CIMA exams and I can’t seem to motivate myself to study at the expense of my side hustle when I don’t see myself in Consulting long term. I know I will gain some valuable lessons from CIMA for future ventures but it is a 3 year qualification alongside a demanding job with minimal downtime. Should I try and qualify or focus on saving money and my side hustles? Also, do I need to qualify to work as a consultant in Big 4 or can I opt not to sit exams?
